technologically we are not evoloving

Formula 1 use to be about evolution of a car and technology, aspiring to the future of design. They stuff we see on modern day formula 1 cars will be on our future cars in 10yrs, so 20yrs from now there will be nothing new. I think formula 1 is standing still and the reson there is no passing is because the modern day F1 car needs new modern day Tracks for it to run on.
i think there should be no rules and you can make any car you want!

Well, having no rules would mean a free-for-all. There has to be some level of regulation on car design. Formula One has advanced an awful lot and still does continuously. You can see it with the ever increasing aerodynamic parts on cars: The regulations should have sliced downforce level and, thus, grip, but the designers have found ways to ensure there is not really that great a loss in grip.

You mention that Formula One is about advancing technology. That is true. However, it's also about the best drivers in the world being able to demonstrate their skills and win championships by doing so. Too much technology has, I think, ruined that slightly. A balance has to be found.

The problem with building "any car" is that you could have a v12, 8.0 turbo car with massive wings, the width of the track so no-one can pass you.

well i think with the new green energy inspired powerplants they will be looking at in the near future this will benefit road cars and the performance of such technologies.
lets face it everyone thinks electric cars are for pussys but if F1 could make some powerful powerplants it might change peoples perceptions

I think and have said before that there should be just one reg: you get an ever decreasing amount of fuel per race every year. How you squeeze as much performance out of those few gallons or liters is up to you.

I hope their is a split in f1 and the rich teams make their own championship, that would be really cool, i would watch that over normal f1 anyday!!!

That would most likely kill F1 racing. Just as in every form of racing there will alway's be team's who are playing 'catch up' and who's to say they wont hit a winning combination of driver and car in the future?

yeah but i think there are to many restrictions in the current f1 layout. they need to find a balance, FIA has over stepped its bounds for the 08' season.

I agree with you about the FIA but having two seperate F1 serie's would make F1 no better than the diabolical rift between CHAMP CAR and the INDY CAR serie's.
Look what it has done to those two serie's, there are more vacant seat's than there are spectator's.

I'd go for that but there needs to be some controls on the dimensions of the car, and the crash test will have to stay.

I could bring a whole new meaning to driving a wide car...

Well, think about it: let's say your strategy is to build a wide car (to prevent others from overtaking you). The wide car would probably suck big time in quali, right? I mean around the corners and all. So, how are you going to make it through the field during the race when you have to go off track every time you want to overtake (because your car is so wide)? Also, the wider, the more material, the heavier. You don't want to be heavy with only a thimble full of fuel available...
I agree all the safety measures and regs will have to stay - those may be restrictive enough already to not allow any 'exotic' over the top designs.

I must say, I am really enjoying this forum, I get reasoned logical replies when I post, so different from the last forum I was on.

Yes of course cars are not going to be ridiculously wide or tall or anything else, but no rules means you can use as big and complex an aero package as you like.

This means large multilevel wings, ground effect cars with skirts and fans to suck the air out from under the car.....

Restricting the dimensions puts at lease some constraints on this.

Minimum ground clearance, maximum width and length thats all.
