Alguersuari given Red Bull reserve role
Wednesday, 01 July 2009 00:00

Young Spanish hotshot Jaime Alguersuari is to take over reserve driver duties for both Red Bull teams from next weekend’s German Grand Prix.

The reigning British Formula 3 champion will replace fellow 19-year-old Brendon Hartley as stand-in driver for Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso, while also continuing to compete in the World Series by Renault.

Red Bull says that with in-season testing no longer permitted, it sees the role of its F1 reserve driver as crucial to the development of its young stars and therefore Alguersuari – who like Hartley is a member of its Young Driver scheme – will take over duties in the second half of the year.

“With the ban on in-season testing, Red Bull views the appointment of a third driver as part of its Young Driver training programme, allowing a driver to follow all activities of the F1 teams over a race weekend, attending technical briefings and listening in on the pit-to-car radio conversations," the company said in a statement.

“Having benefited from this experience over the first half of the year, Hartley will now concentrate on his own racing programme in the European F3 series.”

Alguersuari becomes Red Bull’s third reserve driver of the season after the retired David Coulthard stood in for Hartley for the opening four races while the New Zealand youngster waited to be granted a super licence.

I just thought I'd bump this because I've found out that Hartley has left Red Bull. Does anyone know why? :(

Brendon Hartley is to leave his role as test and reserve driver for Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso after being dropped from Red Bull’s Junior Team.
Hartley was named a test and reserve driver for both Red Bull teams earlier this year and has shared the position with Daniel Ricciardo.
The pair have combined their F1 role with competing in the Renault World Series, but a below-par campaign for Hartley appears to have now cost him his role with the team.
The New Zealander has been outperformed by Ricciardo in the World Series this season and has now been dropped after four years as part of the Junior Team.
Jean-Eric Vergne, the current British F3 points leader, will replace Hartley in the World Series while Ricciardo will now act as the sole test and reserve driver for the Red Bull F1 teams.

Didnt in his last season wherever he was, i believe he struggled and finished 6th. Apparently well below RB's expectations so theyve got rid of him.

To be honest he isnt up to it in all fairness.

I always thought Hartley and Ricciardo were the future of F1.

Now Doubt about the latter one though.
