McLaren will not favour Lewis Hamilton over Jenson Button, despite Hamilton leading the championship from his team-mate at the season's halfway point.

When asked if McLaren regard Hamilton as their de facto number one, team boss Martin Whitmarsh said: "Not yet."

Ahead of the German race, Whitmarsh added: "I'm sure Jenson hasn't given way to Lewis's championship charge.

"He'll want to win this weekend, he'll want to move that momentum back in his favour - and that's how it should be."

Hamilton returns to Hockenheim on the back of a string of consistent results that have resulted in him picking up 86 points from a possible 100 in the last four races.

Victories in Istanbul and Montreal and two second-place finishes in Valencia and Silverstone have lifted him 12 points clear of Button at the top of the championship but Whitmarsh expects the reigning world champion to fight back.

"Jenson is second in the drivers' championship and has had two great wins this year," stated Whitmarsh.

"He's proven he's a great racing driver, a great reader of the race and also someone who can recover from 14th to fourth [at Silverstone] is a phenomenally quick and adept racing driver and someone who has a lot of determination.

"There is a good team spirit and everyone is working very hard - including the two drivers - to help the team achieve success."

Red Bull have been defusing accusations of favouritism within their team after taking a new front wing off Mark Webber's car to give to Sebastian Vettel ahead of qualifying for the last race in Britain.

Despite the tensions, Red Bull remain McLaren's closest rivals in both championships. The team are 29 points adrift of McLaren in the constructor standings, while Webber is 17 points behind Hamilton.

Hockenheim's low-grip surface and slower corners do not necessarily play to Red Bull's strengths but Whitmarsh still expects them to be McLaren's main competition.

"Red Bull are very good in traction out of medium, high-speed corners particularly in qualifying mode," commented Whitmarsh.

"That's been their strength and they'll be strong [in Hockenheim], no doubt.

"Our car is very competitive on heavy fuel, the drivers are often able to make good progress at the beginning of a race and that's the balance at the moment.

"We've put a lot of effort into producing a car that is very quick during the races but generally we haven't qualified as well.

"We're working on that and intend to be quicker than anyone in the race and in qualifying."

With nine races left to go, Whitmarsh believes there is still time for more twists in the tale of both championships.

"I'd love to believe [it is a two-horse race between Red Bull and McLaren] but experience has told me you can't write Ferrari off," explained Whitmarsh.

"Ferrari are a strong team, they are technically capable and have fantastic resources and similarly Mercedes will be pushing hard.

"Red Bull are our principal challenge at the moment but I don't dismiss the others, it's too early to write them off.

"We are in a reasonable position but we know we need to continue to develop the car apace if we're going to win both championships this year."

McLaren are planning to reintroduce a major update package in Germany after abandoning it at Silverstone.

The team rushed through their version of the exhaust blown diffuser - which increases downforce and therefore cornering speed - in Britain but took it off the cars after Friday practice, when Button described his car as "undriveable".

"We gathered some good information [from Silverstone]," added Whitmarsh.

"We go into Hockenheim with more information, we've made some modifications in light of that data and we will be running the blown on Friday.

"I suspect we will be having it on for the weekend. We'll make the call in the light of the data on Friday evening."

Any extra testing could be hampered by the wet weather forecast for Friday's first practice in Germany, which begins at 0900 BST.

I hope that this really is the case as Lewis isn't very far ahead of Jenson given the new points system!

Now, about the Hockenheim track people; I am hearing that this is a Button track..... in other word's that it Button is one of the best at this track. Correct?

What gap do the Button fans think He can beat Hamilton by in Q3, assuming no major mistakes by any of them? 0.05? 0.1?

Great, that's how it should be because when Lewis keeps moving ahead and continues to beat Jenson their will be no excuse from the Button fans accusing Lewis of getting favouritism. Nothing is going to change, the only way Jenson can beat Lewis is through sheer chance or Lewis not finishing races, Lewis is at the top of his game and getting stronger just like last years second half season.

They both have the same car and both have access to each others set up but Jenson can't get near him. If Alonso was on his game or Ferrari, Jenson would not be in second place, i am glad he is though because i want McLaren to win everything. If i was Jenson i would be seriously worried about Webber and co. Unless Lewis really messes up this weekend i can see Jenson losing second place in the championship come Sunday.

Jenson is as good if not better than Lewis in the race; but has been let down for the most part by his qualifying performance, I'm not taking anything away from Lewis but Jenson has to be given due credit, everyone expected Lewis to blow Jenson away this season but that hasn't been the case. Don't be so sure that Jenson can't put in a few decent performances beating Lewis and suddenly we are suddenly level pegging and it could go either way. Just because Lewis has had a few consistent races and outscored Jenson doesn't mean that it will continue for the rest of the season. I think they are equally matched, just with different driving styles!

He wasn't far off a podium from starting 14th at Silverstone, at the start of the season I didn't think there would be much between them if the Mclaren was a decent car but if the car wasn't so good then Lewis would be able to make better use of it which so far looks to me like the case as it doesn't look like a good car for quali but it is a good car for the race. If they can get the car working better in quali I think it'll close the gap between them.

To be fair, all but 3 of Lewis's wins have come from pole. One of those because of the cars in front taking each other out and the other because of a safety car, both which would qualify as odd circumstances.

Let me understand this..

1. Has Jenson Button got access to the same car as Lewis with the same set ups made available?

2. Are you saying that if McLaren get the car up to scratch Lewis will get slower and Jenson all of a sudden get quicker?

By your reckoning Jenson should be on par with Lewis now, he has no excuse because he is in exactly the same car, right?

Jenson has the problem with qualifying not Lewis, you really think that having a better car will help Jenson more than it will Lewis, LOL.

Let's be honest shall we. Jenson Button is not performing the same as Lewis is with the same car and all set ups made available to him,that should tell you something. He lacks Lewis's qualifying pace in the same car and he lacks Lewis's race pace in the same car, this is fact.The only thing that Jenson has or had over Lewis was strategy but even that is not enough.

If you really think the upgrades will help Jenson and not Lewis then it's just wishful thinking on your part. Could Jenson still win, yes of course he could but to beat Lewis or Mark and Sebastian, he really needs a miracle.
