Not sure if this has been discussed as I am new to the forums, but does anyone know what will be the engine situation for a few teams next year, especially the new teams with the Cosworth engine. I've heard a few rumours that some of them are chasing Renault as a supplier and then there is also talk that VW is considering entering the sport, most likely with Williams. I wish Toyota would come back just as an engine supplier because they seemed to build a decent engine, they just supported it with a dull approach to car design and management and chose drivers who couldn't take them to a higher level, ie Ralf, Trulli, Panis, etc.

It seems pretty likely that Lotus will get Renault engines next season. That is a massive boost for them.

I believe the Williams/Cosworth partnership is staying on for another season.

The Toyota engine was the worst on the grid! It was only saved by bullet proof reliability. Someone should have persuaded BMW to keep making engines.

I thought Toyota's engine development had good years and bad years, I think I remember some races where they were pretty potent in a straight line.....or maybe I'm getting confused with either the BMW or the Honda, it seems like eons ago now haha. Either way, F1 would be great to have all these guys back in F1. I'm sure if Toyota just concentrated on engines from the beginning they would have had a lot more success. Although none of them will probably want to come back with the reintroduction of KERS.

2011:

McLaren - Mercedes
Mercedes - Go figure
Red Bull - Still undecided as Horner has hinted at equalising the engines as the crux for the team remaining with Renault. Personally I can't see them changing.
Ferrari - Yep
Williams - Cosworth
Force India - Mercedes
Sauber - Ferrari
Toro Rosso - Ferrari
Lotus - It looks likely that Renault will power them, but if not Cosworth
HRT - Might not even make the grid, but prob Cosworth
Virgin - No hints that they will change, so Cosworth

But deff in the future.

One in the same... but we're talking brand perception here and the Audi brand right now is knee deep in diesel power a$$ kicking the Le Mans series prototypes and they're very happy with that.

I think we'll have to wait until the new engine rules in 201...3? until we see someone like VW come in. I think McLaren will be looking to start making their own engines in the near future too...

That was their stated comment with Mclaren so that will be interesting.

Personally I think Mercedes was fine simply supplying engines but I firmly believe the ONLY reason they got back into the sport as a manufacturer was to spruce up their image and give it a little spit and polish after the Chrysler embarrassment/debacle.

I just just as well see them back out of the sport next year if they don't have a consistent podium car. I think Mercedes is balls to the wall right now on their 2011 ride and fully expect them to get there.

We will never see diesel in F1, to hear a F1 car without the noise is like a page 3 model without the breasts.

You mean a male model?

The VW wants in... but they are not sure which of their names they will want to use: it could be Audi, Porsche, Volkswagen, Skoda... Seat...

Renault do seem to be commiting to F1 nicely.
Better than Cosworth... not because Cosworth is good or poor, but because Renault has already been in F1 for a long time. They should make it nicer for those who are already in.

Cosworth didn't leave F1 of their own accord, they were muscled out by a large influx of factory teams. Considering that their engine was designed for 20K rpms and has never before been campaigned at just 18K, I'm impressed they've done as well as they have.

If/when VW come to F1, I suspect they'll use their own branding. Firstly, they're trying to boost their image as building performance cars on par with Mercy and BMW. Secondly, Audi already have LeMans and I fancy Porsche wouldn't risk sullying their image if the VeeDub engines don't quickly rise to the top.

I think F1 is forever married to petrol. If diesel were made mandatory, several of the factory teams -- chiefly Ferrari -- would flee for the hills and start their own competing petrol-only series. If diesel were permitted as an option, there'd be no end of squabbling over the configuration of the diesel engine. Without forced induction, diesels need huge displacement to produce either substantial HP or Q so they'd either need turbos or the petrol cars would need an 800 kg minimum weight to account for the mass of the diesel car's enormous engine. If you think the teams bicker over the rules now, imagine the non-stop dustups over how much displacement, boost and fuel capacity the diesel cars should be allowed.

And who wants to sit in the bleachers and be swathed in an aroma like a gaggle of articulated lorries barreling down the M25?

I've said it before and I'll say it again, VW does not sound a name that would be at home at F1. Not that this will change the chances of course.
