SInce Ferrari's complaints about the Safety Car procedure I've been wondering what could be done to make the SC fair, for everyone. At first I thought it was just impossible but then this morning I realized that in this age there doesn't even need to be a Safety "Car". There could just be a Safety Period where all cars are restricted to a speed limit, perhaps the same speed they do in the pit lanes. This will give marshals and drivers alike the time they need to safely negotiate each other on the track. And the potential gain/loss a driver can make will be very minimal.

The only downside I can think of is that the fans will lose the excitement of the mix up, bunch up and the restart. But should the sport really be relying on the SC for added excitement? It'd also rule out the possibly of deliberate SC deployment to get your other driver to the front.

I dont know. We never used to have this amount of confusion with the safetycar rules before. They seem to be making it up as they go along. Your idea seems pretty safe, but would it not be better to have the field bunched up to give the marshells longer periods without traffic?

I feel that even with the cars spread out, at low speeds there'd still be ample time and low risk. Even if a marshal did get hit (as occasionally a pit crew member gets run over in the pits), they're probably going to be alright. If traffic cops on motorways manage to direct oncoming traffic into other lanes, i'm sure marshals can safely direct slow coasting F1 cars around a certain line, whilst they pick up the pieces elsewhere.

Yes its a Ferrari thing.
Next time there's a SC car or full yellows they'll just have their drivers overtake the SC and speed to the pits. The fair penalty should be a drive trhough 20 laps later and 5 secs at the end of the race.
Hopefully its not the Hamster getting shafted or there'll be major uproar for the next 15 yrs.

An even better idea: simply overtake the leader, then hold him til the last instant behind the SC then overtake the SC (getting it right this time: before the line). Then rushing to the pits. Again, the penalty should be the same.

This championship just became easier.

I don't understand your rant. Something to do with the last race sure but there's already a rant thread about that. This is just about the SC generally, and whether it should be replaced by remote speed limiters.

EDIT: Don't let the Macca fans wind you up
