Just thinking out loud (gets me in all kinds of trouble), but what about ballast in F1?

It works well in other classes of racing to keep the pack together and action levels high. The cars already carry ballast to ensure they hit the required min weight so it would surely not be too difficult to implement.

To quote JC, 'how hard can it be?'

I would be all for that idea personally; it'll create more interesting racing; although I'm not sure how effective it'd be as Red Bull and McLaren are so far ahead of everyone else!

They already have a minimum weight.

That's what I said above.......they carry ballast now to bring them upto the min weight required.....

Success ballast would be additional weight extra over what they currently carry giving the successful teams a disadvantage, bring the cars closer together and hopefully spice things up. Not sure whether the term is in the dictionary but am sure you'll post up a quote if required

Ahhh, my bad, I did misunderstood you. So it would be like horse racing.

Tha ballast effect imo would just take even more away from the sport, the rediculous rules are hard enough to deal with.

I agree there are too many rules but that would have to be better than what they're proposing in the regs next year, have you seen how convoluted they are? having to be 1 second behind, only after x laps, system cancelled when brake pedal pressed etc etc madness!!

This is a tough one, personally... i don't like the idea of teams being penalised for being quick (specifically in F1 too, given it's standing in the world of motorsport and technology too), but at the same time it's the most obvious and simple solution to creating unpredictable racing.

Competition wise ballast make sense for cars that are not based solely on downforce but not in F1 especially sense we have such a 'train affect' now with virtually no passing.

Bernie might have one of his spies following this forum and thread so maybe next season?? :hehe:

Most of the drivers would be the ideal size to be jockeys with the exception of Button and Webber :) and Vettel has already started to give his ride names.....

Isn't ballast in HR used to hit a min weight as well, just like the current F1 regs?......

That's always the danger, why bother developing and being quick when we get penalized for it?...what would the sponsors say? Unless you've got a blue chip lead supply company :)

I just don't see the point in spending a billion dollars in a technology based racing series to then stick a chunk of led in it. Kind of pissing money away. I'm more in support of allowing additional test dates to the bottom third of constructors.
