I don't think I buy the theory about a lack of talent in the USA. Juan Pablo was a front running F1 driver and brought that massive skillset to bear in nascar...and was mid pack, nothing special. I think Juan Pablo accomplished two things in his downgrade to nascar. He proved that Formula one, while being the (sort of) pinnacle of motor car development....the drivers aren't the supermen they are made out to be. Otherwise Juan should have dominated nascar and he certainly has not. The second thing he proved was that McDonalds cheeseburgers can be eaten while driving a race car....you simply lay the burger on top of your man-boobs while cornering and pick it back up on the straights.

In today's Formula one, a driver must bring a fairly massive sponsorship package with him in order to gain a seat....and American sponsors for a series that has shown very little desire for a north american stop are few and far between.

Juan isnt north American. he's columbian.

I think Bill knows that and his wording got off track, like yours does quite often, but I and the non-blinded know what he meant. A F1 driver held at god status comes to the most popular, sad I know , racing series in the US but cannot cut it even with one of the best teams in NASCAR history????

Talent is only part of it. It has to be properly groomed talent. Luca Badoer is one of the most accomplished test drivers in the world but last year he sucked as a sub for the mending Massa. Racing experience in a similar format is indispensable for success in F1. Had JPM not wasted all those years in F1, he might well be dominating NASCAR.

Don't forget Nigel Mansel and Emo Fittipaldi both got old and slow and and washed out of F1, then went to the US and won ...what's that little open wheel race in the mid-west, ...oh yeah, the Indianapolis 500.
