With 8 races gone and 11 races left it seems to me that only 5 drivers are in the running for the championship this year. And to me it appears that there is no clear favorite.

Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button, Mark Webber, Fernando Alonso & Sebastian Vettel.

I can't remember such a tight season in the last 15 years I have been watching F1. It is fantastic.

However, who hasn't made that list?

Felipe Massa

I rule out Massa as he simply has not got the pace this year, he is unable to get the most out of the Ferrari and is consistently slower than Alonso. Massa might not even win a race this year! I hope he does but I doubt it.

Nico Rosberg

Mercedes have been nothing but a disappointment this year. Rosberg has made the best of a bad situation with his Mercedes by consistently scoring points and getting two podium finishes. But there is no hope of a the WDC this year as the MGP01 at it's best is 0.3 - 0.5 a lap off the pace.

Michael Schumacher

The biggest disappointment of the year. He has been comprehensively outmatched by his younger underrated team mate. No matter what way Schumacher himself tries to spin it or fans alike he has been letting Mercedes down at almost every race. A podium finish this year for Michael will be like a win in what will arguably be his last season in F1 imo.

What do you think? Am I making any sense or is the above all dribble? Are there any dark horses this year? *cough Kubica *cough

And what do you think about Felipe Massa's, Nico Rosberg's & Michael Scumacher's seasons so far? Give your own summary!

I hope Massa can come back, but yeah I just can't see him beating Alonso,

I'd also remove Vettle, he doesn't seem able to handle the pressure very well, I think Webber has a clear edge over him. Vettle doesn't seem to have the all "round package", can't see him pulling off any stragety calls like Jenson has done this season for example, similar with Massa I suppose.

I ruled out Massa before the season started.

The season is open for both Redbull drivers and Lewis Hamilton. Alonso and Jenson for an outside chance of winning it. Alonso if Ferrari get their act together quickly, Jenson if Lewis has a string of mechanical gremlins. So in answer to the topic, I'd go with Jenson since I expect Ferrari to come back to form soon.

I can see one of the Mclarens winning the drivers championship, with Mclaren winning the constructors too

Vettel was my favourite last year as he was somewhat of an underdog compared with the Brawn dominance early on, but it seems this year that he just simply falls at the final hurdle somehow.

I think what you've said about Massa is true too, i just dont see him on the same level as Alonso.

I see it as Alonso battling against the two Mclarens, with the Red Bulls sprinkled in between, with both the Red Bulls sort of taking points off each other with the end result them being probably 3rd and 5th in the championship

i think evryones being abit hard on schui hes not god you can't expect him after having not driven an F1 car in 4 years to just come back, win every race by 10mins.

Hes starting to get better hes beat Nico a few times 2011 we may see him up there.

Comprehensivly beaten - no, for comprehensivly beaten see Massa v Alonso.

Ayrton Senna didn't win the title in his first season either.

There's the old saying, to finish first, one must first finish.

The new teams first gotta sort out finishing races. Getting comfortable with all the difficulties in a GP, THEN think about points. So far, some of them have done a decent job... i'm sure its difficult because of the lack of testing and the huge budgets required.

Hoever, out of all the new teams lately, Force india has really caught my attention. I really thought they were an 'exposure' inclusion (ie just to be seen hanging out with the big guys), but they have been steadily making progress and come up a credible racing team.

Ah... who wont win........ Besides Trulli:

Massa.
Rosberg.
Schumacher.
Kubica.

Webber vs Vettel is very close. Webber looks more on form lately, but perhaps Vettel needs just a boost to get back in form... both are making/have made too many mistakes. This could have been a Brawn-style blowout by now.

Jenson v Lewis... is even closer. I think Jenson will end up with more pts. But Jenson NEEDS to improve Q. His races are seemingly flawless and i simply cant see him making mistakes that could cost him the championship... but without a better Q its all too difficult.

Alonso... depends on the Ferrari updates. And his engines... perhaps near the end of the season those couple of discarded engines will cost him dearly.

In the end, i think a Red Bull will win it.

I think the title will be between Vettel and Hamilton.

We can hope that Webber does a good enough job to take the title, but it's clear Vettel isn't driving well right now. I don't Webber is doing a better job, Vettel is just doing a poor job. Too many car failures and lost victories have got to his head, and he seem desparate at times. Look at Canada quali. He had several laps, and messed up pretty much all of them.

Lewis is on a roll, and I'd say a Valencia win is coming next which will put him in such a strong posistion. Button hasn't been doing too badly, but he's made some smart decisions and had plenty of luck. But that doesn't hide the fact that Lewis is getting faster and faster. Button has never really been faster than Lewis in quali, and the gap between the two has grown over each of the last 4 races. Button has finished ahead of his team-mate on track during his two victories. Over the season I think Hamilton will edge further away in points.

Ferrari's challenge will depend on their update for Valencia, and what they do after. Alonso can win the championship, but he needs the car. Massa unfortunatly isn't on the pace of Alonso. Although he is closer. He out-qualified Alonso in Turkey, and was only 2 tenths off in Canada. But over the whole season it's Alonso who will make the most of the car, race in day out.

The new points make everything look very spaced out, but it's so close. A win for Rosberg, Massa or Kubica would put them right amongst the top 5.

Valencia will show how quick Ferrari is with their upgrades so I'd say it's between Lewis, Vettel and Alonso. Sorry for Webber fans for not giving any love to him but I just CAN'T see him winning the title. Alonso vs Lewis would be a hell of a end to the season
