The current system for awarding driver points in F1 is so unimaginative and uncompetative my grandmother could arrange better for her retirement home zimmer racing. In my opinion a far more interesting system would be based on time with for example: 50pts awarded for 1st place followed by a loss of 1pt per secound of time counting down from 50secs to Zero thereby if the 2nd place driver finished 7secs behind the winner he would recieve 43pts with points awarded to all who finish within the 50secs, this would result in drivers also racing the clock and not just settling for a safe guaranteed amount of points surely this would lead to more exciting racing and bring back more tyre stop strategy.

I still don't like the new points system, the value of a world Championship point has been depreciated.

They needed to spread points out for the larger field. Plus with a large gap between first and second, no one runs away with it early unless they winn several races in a row. It lets people in 4th or 5th suddenly be 1st. They will always make changes to the points to accomodate changes to the field.
I wouldn't mind seeing minor points for grid positions and fastest laps ans most laps led etc, or minor points for finishing ahead of your grid spot and loss of points for finishing behind it.

If we were still with last years points there would be less then 3 point between the top three. So the points system this year has actually widened the gap, it's just this years championship is the closest for decades.

1 Lewis Hamilton 44
2 Jenson Button 43
3 Mark Webber 40
4 Fernando Alonso 38
5 Sebastian Vettel 37
6 Nico Rosberg 29
7 Robert Kubica 29
8 Felipe Massa 26
9 Michael Schumacher 13
10 Adrian Sutil 7
11 Vitantonio Liuzzi 2
12 Vitaly Petrov 2
13 Rubens Barrichello 1
14 Sébastien Buemi 1
15 Jaime Alguersuari 0
16 Kamui Kobayashi 0
17 Nico Hülkenberg 0
18 Pedro de la Rosa 0
19 Heikki Kovalainen 0
20 Karun Chandhok 0
21 Lucas di Grassi 0
22 Jarno Trulli 0
23 Bruno Senna 0
24 Timo Glock 0

Minor differences between the current points system and the older one. So I like the new one better because Jaime wouldn't have scored in the other one. :D

TBH I have not even tried to remember how many points are awarded this year.

As for not believeing that some teams have not scored points, If you think about it, it would mean that for the HRT's over half the field would of stopped for them to get a point.

I definitely prefer the new points system; it gives drivers in second place a much bigger incentive to attack the driver in the lead; last year there was very little incentive to go all out for the win, only two points difference between first and second, with the new system there is a seven point difference and a driver down in 5th/6th can jump massively up the championship table with one win. This has shaken up the grid big time and I love the idea of not having a clear runaway leader.

I like it also. It would have given guys like Kubica, or maybe a Mercedes a shot at the WDC tables with sporadic wins... for example Kubica winning Monaco, or Rosberg or Schumacher winning whichever odd track or odd racing conditions, would have brought more drivers to the game table.

I can go with this as well

@Gary Grant

I disagree on this years points making it boring. BUT i totally commend you on your points system based on time behind leader.

I think that'd be an awesome idea for a race series. The winner wouldn't be content with merely winning, they'd want to win by as big a margin as they can. And the entire grid will be pushing like crazy, regardless of whether they can make up places or not, because if they can just scrape inside that 50 second window they'll be rewarded for their efforts.

I'm going to add this one to my list. ;)

I think it would be cool if a constructor got 1 point for 1 of their cars finishing the race, counting only towards the constructors championship.

This would provide some sort of competition between the new teams, as getting both cars come is quite an accomplishment, that is right now going unrewarded
