It's the better side of the grid because that's where the racing line is, meaning there's less dirt and it's better rubbered in, i.e., has better grip and the wheels won't spin empty as much at the start, which is crucial for getting off the starting line.

In the days of sunday morning practise a driver would drive down that main straight swooping over his starting position so that it was cleaner for his start.
