ESPNF1:
Despite assurances from a number of senior officials, including Bernie Ecclestone, rumours continue to circulate that all is not well in Korea ahead of October's inaugural grand prix.

Although Ecclestone recently dismissed rumours that construction of the new Yeongam circuit might not be finished on time, political tensions between South Korea and the rogue North have been escalating. South Korea has blamed the North for the recent sinking of a naval vessel that killed 46 sailors, and the North retaliated by threatening all-out war.

"If there is [war] we won't be there obviously," F1 chief executive Ecclestone told reporters in Turkey. Some media reports claim the political situation may already have further slowed down construction of the 5.62 kilometre circuit.

Amid the uncertainty, it is believed that the F1 teams association FOTA is not currently prepared to charter some of its equipment to Korea ahead of time if there is no guarantee of a race.

Moreover, it emerges that most teams have not yet booked airline tickets and hotel rooms for their staff, even though plans for the subsequent Brazilian and Abu Dhabi events are well advanced.

If Korea is cancelled, there will be an extremely rare four-week break between the Japanese and Brazilian grands prix.

With the longstanding riff between north and south Korea frankly I'm amazed that 'Butthead Bernie' would have even attempted such a race. It is apparent that he was offered a deal he could not refuse to line his pockets even more and totally disregarded the safety of F1 fans and the reputation of F1 as a whole.

It'd certainly add some excitement to the race; dodging bombs n' all... But yes; it does seems like a MASSIVE FAIL on Bernie's part to grant South Korea a Grand Prix race, what next? Vietnam?, although there was peace when it was booked plus north and south were attempting to be friendly...

I'm holding out for the Somalia Grand Prix.

Nah, I want an Afghani GP - can you imagine those bends and elevation changes around the Khyber Pass?

Better still, let's have a GP on the moon, F1 racing at 1/6th Earth's gravity... it'll certainly punish mistakes... :hehe::twisted:

But, but, there aren't any Martians on the moon who could open fire on drivers who make mistakes such as taking your own team mate out - Taliban FTW!

I'm still voting for an Accrington Stanley Grand Prix! Or at least a Grand Prix in Mauritius!

If Crash Bandicoot can dodge missiles, I'm sure Hamilton can too!

I dunno, with the way Hamilton and Button's luck goes, Hamilton's relatively rotten luck would pretty much guarantee that the bulk of the bombs land on him and the way Button's great luck has been going he would be the only car that doesn't get blown up, not by skillfully dodging them but because the bombs just happened to fall away from him.

I don't believe the situation with North Korea is the reason South Korea is behind schedule. Certainly, they've had plenty of time to get the circuit ready. Kinda sounds like an excuse from a student who was assigned an essay three weeks ago and is now saying since he got sick the day before it was due couldn't write it.

But with that said, we can defend Bernie because who among us could have predicted the current situation with the sinking of the ship and all that has followed. Of course, on the other hand, the North and South never signed a peace treaty between them and are still technically "at war". So anything can happen on the Korean peninsula.

what next? Vietnam?

Seems a bit harsh to compare South Korea to Somalia and Vietnam. South Korea is a vibrant and modern city comparable to many places in Japan.

As for fears over war...please. If the North dropped a dirty nuke, then the GP should be the last thing on our minds. If it came to land-warfare, it would be the shortest in history. Most North Korean soldiers probably haven't been payed in ages and are borderline malnourished...and do not forget the 1950's technology.

This satellite picture of North and South Korea at night sums it up really. If you can't pick it, you need to go back to school and study geography again. :hehe:
