ive always known the gears boxes in f1 are 7 speed with a reverse gear, however in many years of f1 the first time i saw it used was during practice 2 by bruno senna. which makes me wonder - whats the point? surely the gear boxes would be much more efficient without the reverse gear?

Aswell the R gear can help eliminate hazardous obsticles ie a race car still running in the middle of the track after a spin when a forward gear would only put them in a wall or sand trap  .
