I think VW of America treats it's customers like red headed stepchildren. I've owned 7 of them so I consider myself a good customer. But things like the VW Routan are an embarrassment and the fact that they won't import half their fleet of vehicles here for fear of cannibalizing their Jetta and Golf sales is a slap in the face to their VW enthusiast base.

What do you expect? The Routan is a rebatched Chrysler Minivan

I have a Chrysler minivan, and I'd take the VW version of it over them all.

One of the happiest days of my life was seeing the minivan I no longer needed being driven off by the leasing company. It was promptly replaced by a Saab 9000 Turbo.

HA! As if. She came along for the ride. The kids now only need money food and fast internet access, in everything else they're self sufficient.

Now to get back on topic. I'd consider another VW for my daughter as she get's her driver's permit this year. My first love was a 1980 Scirocco. Penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro, in my opinion one of the greatest automotive designers of our time.

I love Giugiaro but he did do some duds like the Pony and Stellar(both of them are Hyundais). He did the Lancia Delta too, which was OK but not pretty. He did that large Renault(21 maybe?) in the 80s that was called Eagle Premier and Dodge Monaco in the US, made by Chrysler in Brampton Ontario(I worked in the construction of that plant). I thought it was good looking but the buying public expected more daring styling, and underneath it had nothing going for it and it was a flop.

I agree with some of your examples especially the Eagle Premier. I think that I even recall reading a long time ago that VW hired him to design the Mk II Scirocco and his design was rejected. Apparently it was then sold as the Isuzu Impulse. But the point I'm trying to make is that car designers ultimately work for a customer and some customers hold the rein loose and others very tightly.

Ah yes you reminded me the 1st gen Impulse was indeed a Giugiaro(I never knew it was supposed to be the Scirocco II). So, IIRC, was the 1st gen Lotus Esprit.
