Why not get rid of the blue flag rule. Whilst it helps the front runners why should it be made so easy for them to overtake. This is a skill of driving and those who can overtake easier and better would have an advantage. It will show an All Round Driver and not just one who can drive a car fast. This will also add entertainment and lets be honest, overtaking is the best part of car racing, regardless of whether it is on front runners or back markers.

Safety. The speed differential is often such that it's important for the leading car to be allowed past rather than risk crashing into the slower car unnecessarily

Exactly. If the blue flag rule were removed there'd be a major row when a race leader was taken out trying to overtake a back marker.

That said, the back markers would have nothing to gain by defending against a car trying to lap them – if anything they'd lose more time to the cars they are still competing against, so even without the rule they'd probably let them pass.

He was stuck behind him for 45 laps and only got past when Bernoldi pitted and was 4 secs faster straight away

Its a silly rule though, the rule needs to be tweaked, for example with DC then.. it was ridiculous and also look at a race last year Hamilton got hit by someone and was a lap down mid-field.. they were all pretty bunched up and had to let a fair few cars past even though he was right up behind them the whole race... but couldn't overtake due to the rule even though he was alot faster.

Basically once you have somthing bad happen you have to hope others go off the road or something..

Bernoldi was defending his position from DC, not being lapped, so the blue flag issue doesn't come into play then. DC was only mad because he thought a less competitive car should not defend, but Bernoldi said tough poop DC that's the rules, you want it, take it.

Yeh but take away the blue flag rule thats what you'd get.

Thats the point DD is making.

I must have missed a point...

Well without blue flags lapped cars should still have to move over, only they need to figure it out themselves.

There was a safety car rule that made the lapped cars unlap themselves. Do they still have that? It helps get them out of the way, yet also makes them obstacles a second time.

...Well gee, why do we bother with Yellow Flags while we're at it.
