A return for KERS is one of the many things being discussed this weekend by the teams, let the moaning from Eddie Jordan re-commence! :hehe:

Teams to discuss return of KERS

By Jonathan Noble and Dieter Rencken Friday, April 2nd 2010, 02:25 GMT

The potential return of Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS) to Formula 1 for 2011 is set to dominate the agenda of a meeting of team principals in Malaysia later today, AUTOSPORT has learned.

The Formula One Teams' Association (FOTA) is holding a get-together this evening to discuss the lessons of the first few races, and begin evaluation of improvements that could be made to the sport to improve the show.

Although some of the talks are expected to revolve around technical changes to the cars, sources suggest that one of the main areas of focus to help improving overtaking will be in getting KERS back on the cars.

The green technology was abandoned at the end of last year when teams agreed amongst themselves not to run the devices for 2010, because of the vast expense in successfully developing it. The use of the system remains in F1's technical regulations, however.

AUTOSPORT understands that teams will look at all options for a KERS return in 2011 - ranging from a standard supplier to freeing up the technology totally. Teams will also look at exactly how much, or how little, power the KERS should have.

The momentum behind getting KERS back has been increased because of the difficulties that drivers have faced in overtaking this season - and providing a push-to-pass system once again would help with the racing.

There is also a high chance that revisions to the cars already in the pipeline will help the situation further. Double diffusers have already been banned for 2011, which should cut downforce levels, while it is understood that the FIA is looking at increasing the diameter of F1's rear tyre rims to 18 inches for next year - up from the 13 inches of the current generation.

This will produce much more mechanical grip, which should be another factor in helping boost the racing spectacle.

Stupid idea, all teams end up finding the best part of track to use kers and all use it at same time. So end up as square one with same overtaking problems. F1 needs to allow teams freedom again, without budgets or restrictions. Any engine / aero they want within certain limits.

I disagree, there could be a lot of driver input. Chasing each other and trying to tease the other into using the KERS as a panic button to avoid a seeming overtake, thereby exhausting KERS for the one in front who then becomes easy prey for the one behind who still has some KERS left to overtake.

you have to admit there was alot of overtaking done by Lewis and his magic button.

If every car had it though it would be neutral, unless the systems were diffrent

Wouldn't mind it returning, but it needs to be more powerful and available in shorter bursts (or possibly even a driver adjustable system that changes the power/duration balance). It should be compulsory too, something which i'm assuming will happen anyway.

If they didn't put the stupid 60hp cap on it and make it between 150 and 200hp it would make a difference. And also get rid of the limit on how much it can be used. If KERS is a green technology why put a stupid limit on it?

Good point about the limit and the green technology, but really i guess it's just a green solution to the overtaking problem rather than the other way round, if you get me.... and if there is no limit it could easily cover all possible overtaking spots on each track - hence why i think it should possibly be more limited, i.e. a following driver could trick their opponent into using their lap's allocation in one stretch, but then use their own later in the lap at the next opportunity, when the car in front is 'disadvantaged'.

18inch wheels don't sound too bad...

I dunno. I like the unique high-profile F1 tyres we have now.

I don't know why the team's just don't agree to re-widen the cars back to 1997 spec.

maybe has something to do with michelin suggestion that if they were to supply it should be 18inch and not 13 plus they want the teams to pay for the tyres.
There's a bunch of tyre manufacturers that would love to supply if they get payment for the tyres but like VB said.. 18 inches dont sound too bad.

ive always always wanted kers [from very early on]to come back! i think its quite an easy partial fix to the overtake problem

would like to see a bigger HP boost and longer time duration
