I've been hoping for the return of turbos since 07'. As far as power to weight ratios go you can't do better and they just sound so much sweeter the n/a units. This is Bernie's best way of luring back the manufactures, 1.5L I-4 WOOSSSH FTW!!!

I for one can imagine BMW and/or Honda relishing that opportunity seeing how their turbo engines were the most powerful.

Don't Toyota have really good straight 4 turbo engines as well?

Yes they do in the form of the 503E which powered there IMSA and Pikes Peak cars.

Those Toyotas sound like they're gonna explode, absolutely awesome! In the second vid, does anyone know any other times, by other cars? It says that the Toyota 4cyl has the record with just over 10 mins, but I wonder what other cars have tried and what their times were.

I would still like to see a F1 race where some cars are running 1.5L turbo fours and others 3.5L N/A V12s. And to "hear" it as well, the difference, if any (both would be incredibly high revving so I'm not sure what diff there might be except for the turbo whine).

This would be great for f1, thing ive hated in past years is the dramatic decrease in engine power. From v10s singing at 22000rpms allway down to v8s at 18000 :/ And was talks of going down to v6 aswell.

v12 turbos 25000rpm, change engine at every pitstop. sounds good to me haha

I'm not sure about 25K rpm, the cars will start to sound more like Scalextric cars at that high a rev range... actually some of the cars already do sound like Scalextric cars anyway.

Can someone enlighten me as to why there is a cylinder standard to begin with? Is it all about saving money and trying to bring in more teams for competition sake?

I just don't see the point of limiting engines to V8. It should be enough to limit the size to 3.0L (or whatever), and let the manufacturers build whatever they feel will be competitive BMW would prefer a V10 and Ferrari a V12, but both would be 3.0L and both would put out similar power/torque with different power/torque bands, very interesting indeed! V8s would be equally competitive, with much more air/fuel per cylinder but fewer cylinders.

I just don't get this regulation.

Some of it has to do with manufacturing and maintenance cost.

F1 and racing is suspose to be entertaining in my opinion. I'd rather watch tense, wheel to wheel action, than a technical processional showcase about who can spend the most money. If impressive tech has to be dropped in order to get some great action, then I'm all for it.

Then you are watching the wrong series. You should be watching Indy Open Wheel or Nascar and the likes. F1 is about showcasing technology, and we're not about to sacrifice that to please you, when you already have all kinds of racing circuits and series to choose from. Leave F1 to us fans.

It seems that F1 means different things to different people.
To me it means seeing the best open-wheeled racers battle it out to see who is the best of them all, who has the balls to throw it round the outside etc
All this new technology doesn't interest me very much, im more interested in the meat and bones of racing, big V12 Ferrari engines, the old DFV's with Hewland gearbox combinations, that sort of thing. When the cars had actual steering wheels instead of playstation controllers.

I know it's all been done before and times change, but i still feel that it would be more fun watching 2 dozen racers battling it out armed with only a steering wheel, a gated shifter, clutch, brake and throttle pedals.

One thing is clear, and that is that something needs to be changed about the cars, as Schumi has said, it's almost impossible to overtake in these cars. Whether it is the aero, tyres, gearbox, it needs to be investigated and changed i feel.

Also Trypt, it seems that your post has used the collective 'we' when talking about F1 fans, when i feel that your opinion is not shared by the majority of posters here.

I hear you ! Your argument almost exactly mirrors the one I seem to be having on a more frequent basis recently. It may seem old fashioned, and maybe even a backward step, but what is so wrong with F1 being about finding out who the best driver is ? Even though the technical side of F1 interests me greatly, I really couldn't care less who the best software programmer is in the pitlane.
Technology is all well and good, but when it starts to detract from the skill of the driver then it's gotta be curtailed. I mean traction & launch control and ABS brakes ??? What is the point in that when we're talking about the supposed best drivers in the world. The same goes for the semi auto boxes they use now. On a technical level seamless shift is very impressive, but I'd be more impressed with a seamless heel & toe downshift......

Racing series that rely on driver skill are a dime a dozen, there are so many to choose from, Porsche racing, supercar, indycar, nascar, V8s, blah blah blah.

Why would you want to make F1 the same as all those other series? What's the point? The day F1 equalizes everything for the sake of "competition" is the day they lose me, I won't have any interest in it whatsoever, due to the clear fact that once that happens, the days of F1 being the "best" are going to be over.

In fact, I would rather see F1 be all about technology and the best of the best the automotive industry has to offer. One day, that may mean no drivers at all, just computers driving incredible machines around tracks, each built by a different competing manufacturer. I'd prefer this extreme to the one you're proposing, at least it will still be one of a kind.

But I know you'll get your way in the end, and F1 will become just another circuit with a bunch of identical cars with the only difference being the skill of the driver and the team. Well, I love that, but there are dozens of circuits like that already, some of which I already enjoy very much, and I don't want to add F1 to an already crowded field.
