'Anyone but England' shirt fears

A company selling "Anyone but England" T-shirts for this year's World Cup has rejected suggestions it is racist after police in Aberdeen visited its store.

Police warned Slanj, which also has stores in Glasgow and Edinburgh, that a window display featuring the shirt could cause offence.

Grampian officers advised a store worker to consider whether the display was appropriate and should be removed.

A spokesman for Slanj said staff were "flabbergasted" by the warning.

Ross Lyle, from the company, said: "To be honest we're absolutely flabbergasted.

"We have been selling this T-shirt for the past three months and we've had a great response.
“ We would be failing in our duty if we did not make people aware of the potential for disturbance such a window display could cause ”

"Even the English people who come into the store think it's a laugh and just a bit of tongue-in-cheek football banter.

"We're certainly not being racist. We are the same race as the English. It's just daft to say it's offensive."

A spokesman for Grampian Police said the force's visit to the Slanj store was not in response to any public complaint about the shirt slogan and was prompted by an officer acting on his own initiative.

In a statement, the force said it was purely an "advisory visit" and there was no criminal investigation as a result.

Pc Kirk Hemmings added: "The primary role of any police force is to preserve the peace and we would be failing in our duty if we did not make people aware of the potential for disturbance such a window display could cause.

"The Grampian area, in common with the rest of the country, has recorded incidents relating to nationality and we have a responsibility to do our best to ensure that incidents of this nature are kept to a minimum.

"The public expect no less of us."

They should just reword the shirts to say "We're crap at football and just jealous of our neighbours, so want don't want them to win." I'm sure that would be acceptable, i mean it is true...

IT really should read: "Yes we are crap at Football, but we don't kid ourselves. We are not world beaters and neither are our neighbours down the road. Therefore, we will take great pleasure in seeing them make fools of themselves yet again. Whether it be in the media or on the field."

There wouldn't be enough room on the T-shirt though :(

Problem is, we do actually have a realistic shot at it this time. :P

Keep telling yourself that

Okay will do, and you keep telling yourself that we are simply deluded for actually daring to think our team is actually pretty good, when our team is loaded with top level footballers and we have probably the form striker of Europe in our team! :hehe:

Your team is good, but something will happen. Penalties, the Germans, Hands of god. :hehe: They always do. Of course the team could implode before the tournament even starts. JT and Ashley Cole have already pissed off Capello.

No offence Scotty, but every tournament/competition that comes along you guys always think the same thing *were good enough and were going to win it* yet every tournament /competition that comes along you guys get knocked out of it, why cant you lot take it one game at a time and see what happens from there like everybody else instead of getting your hopes build up only to be knocked down again

I wonder who the fall guy will be this time round lol

We know we are crap and admit it,, makes it feel all the better when you beat a team like france :D

England on other hand,, will be same old story at world cup. Get so close, fook it up then blame someone for it. Either a manager or a player that ends up getting the whole country on its back lol

There's nothing wrong with thinking positively; what's the point of even competing if you don't think you have a chance of winning?

Going back to the original point; it is stupid that a store should be warned about such a thing; I'm all for friendly rivalry and banter as long as it stays friendly.

Eh? Do you just get all your opinions from the Daily Record or something? We think we have a good chance, not that we are definitely going to win, and what, seriously is so crazy about that? You can bet the Spaniards, Brazilians and Argies feel the same way! All i'm getting is the sour grapes vibe here...
