Looks like this race will take place this year:

Organisers of the Korean Grand Prix have moved to allay concerns their new circuit will not be ready in time for the inaugural race this year.

The new track is currently undergoing construction in Yeongam County, 320km south of the capital Seoul. The Korea Auto Valley Operation (KAVO) in control of the build, alongside renowned F1 circuit designer Hermann Tilke, is confident the facility will be ready in time for the Korean Grand Prix on October 24.

"The representative facilities of the circuit are in very good progress," KAVO CEO Yung Cho Chung said. "The racing track itself is at 70% completion rate and the main grandstand currently stands at 80%. The Formula One track is now visible. It may be completed in June at the earliest."

KAVO has a seven-year deal with Bernie Ecclestone to host the race, with an optional five-year extension. The track will be 3.5 miles in length and will feature Asia's longest straight, allowing for speeds up to 200mph. The grandstands will have a capacity of 135,000 people and KAVO has said it will focus on completing these F1 facilities first, with infrastructure for other forms of racing taking a back seat.

Potentially what could be the most boring surroundings to any F1 circuit in history.

Are the surroundings of the track more important than the track itself?

A1 ring is one of my favorite tracks of all time, nothing but beautiful countryside all around. As long as the track is good, I could care less about the rest.

Just judging from the pic taken last year. They said the last part of the track is meant to be like a street circuit, through a city-like construction. It looks like it could just be a big dust bowl.

As for the track layout, it just might be the best of the Tilke-Dromes. There's enough flow in the corners to create a greater challenge than Valencia or Yas Island. And overtaking is not limited to one place either.

The longest straight thing is annoying. Sure long straight, big breaking area is good for overtaking, but it's getting to the stage where the straights are almost too long, and this one will be longer than the back straight in China, which already straddles 3 time zones :banghead:

Doesn't look as bad as I thought it did originally when the layout map was first released, that simulation looks a fair bit more open than say Valenci-yawn or Abu Dhabi.

McLaren Technical Director: Neil Oatley

The circuit appears to have one longish straight, then the rest seems to be a mixture of corners leading into one another. Will be difficult to overtake.

So scrape away the corporate and you have. "Guff"
