No guys you are focusing in the wrong spot... If you look at the top fin of the mclaren wing you can see a black line. This is where the air that comes from the fat shark fin comes out. The wing is hollow in the inside... CLEVER V CLEVER...... !!!!

its not the slot in the rear wing it is McLarens shark fin that joins to the rear wing. Basically it is a tube that starts in the engine air intake above the drivers helmet you can see there are two inlets the one above is said to go to the rear wing and induce stall at top speed thus losing downforce. But at lower speeds the rear wing works as it should. There is even talk that the inlet is driver controlled.
Pretty innovative design if you ask me.

I like the idea simply because why waste a pontential area or aspect of exhuast flow that can be contribute to downforce?

Well, i would imagine if it's driver controlled it'd be classed as moving aero and thus potentially illegal on some level, but i don't think it is driver controlled... my understanding is - that section of the wing is hollow (as borg said), air is fed into that hollow section and pushed though the slot at high pressure. Therefore i would guess that the 'stalling' effect occurs once the pressure is too great for the airbox inlet to allow more air in, ie at high speeds (hence why there is only a paper thin slot and not a large gap). I'm no aerodynamics expert but that theory does make sense.

Either that or it leads to the diffuser i would think. Reason being that i seem to remember McLaren had one of their aero reading contraptions in there during testing...
