Michelin in talks for F1 return

Michelin is in talks with the FIA about a possible return to Formula One.

With Bridgestone pulling out as the sport's official sole supplier at the end of 2010, the French tyre marque's Jean-Dominique Senard told Bloomberg that "formal discussions" with the governing body are underway.

Michelin pulled out of F1 at the end of 2006, disgruntled by the FIA's move to impose a single-tyre formula by tender.

"We might consider returning but there are some very clear conditions," Senard said in an interview in Paris.

He said the tyre rules need changing to "show the performance they can bring, notably in terms of fuel saving and CO2 reductions".

An FIA spokesman would not comment.

That article is quite vague but it does at least seem that Michelin would be willing to consider a return... which is only a good thing as they are one of the very few tyre manufacturers with the knowledge and infrastructure to actually supply F1!

I agree. But I don't agree that F1 should only have a control tyre. Two tyre makers is necessary and I think a tyre war is essential in F1 now that tyres are going to be the only major factor in terms of strategy.

I miss the tyre war days, there was always some excitement to be had whenever James Allen shouted out "and the Michelins are entering their special phase" whenever Montoya and Raikkonen started to lap half a second or so faster than the Ferrari's on Bridgestones.

It seems odd to me, considering Michelin declined to tender a bid for the F1 deal because they shared your view (And mine) that a single tyre supplier is a lame idea - indeed, the even pulled out a year early in protest to the move, that they would suddenly decide they want to succeed Bridgestone as the sole supplier.

well technically they dont have a control tyre as it is now. Bridgestone has a few compounds for various tracks, a control tyre is one compound for every track.

I like the fact (?) that they put some pressure on the FIA re. the role of tires in fuel saving and CO2 reduction. We have a saying in German: steter Tropfen höhlt den Stein, which translates to constant drops will hollow the rock. This would be another drop to hopefully finally get the FIA to do something about these environmental issues (and I don't count green stripes on the tires as doing something :banghead: ).

Nah Tyre war is not what I want, speeds will get too high and the FIA will go mental and bring in some stupid regs to try and slow them down again and we'll end up with horrible narrow track cars and grooved tyres or something along those lines. Plus it opend the door for a team to get on board with one particular tyre company and basically bribe them into designing the tyres to suit their car like Ferrari managed to do with Bridgestone
