FORMULA 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone is in the running to take the driving seat at struggling car firm Saab. The billionaire has teamed up with Luxembourg-based investment company Genii Capital to launch a takeover bid.

Swedish firm Saab have been put up for sale by their US owners GM as they try to slash debts.

Ecclestone, 79, said: "It's a good brand that has probably been neglected by the current owners. "We don't own it yet, so let's see what happens." The extent of Ecclestone's involvement in the bid has not been revealed but his fortune is estimated at £2.3billion.

In a statement Genii, who last month invested in Renault's F1 racing team, said they would "aggressively work towards a successful closing of the transaction". But Dutch car firm Spyker ,who have F1 connections themselves, are also in the running to land Saab.

After buying the former Jordan and Midland outfit, they raced their own team in 2007 before selling to Force India at the end of the season. Spyker boss Victor Muller said: "We believe the Saab brand has lots of potential and would be keen to close a deal as quickly as possible."

Gm want to concentrate on their core brands such as Chevrolet and boss Ed Whitacre has made clear his desire to get rid of Saab. He said last week: "Just show up with the money and you can you have it." They have threatened to close Saab if their year-long search for a buyer proves fruitless.

Ya i agree. GM are a disaster. They don't know what to be doing, they were messing around with the Opel brand quite a bit lately.

GM aren't so bad... I say this because I have just acquired a Chevrolet... which is apparently going to kill me with it's 1 star side impact rating.

But it's good to hear that so many people are interesting in acquiring Saab even if one of those people is the poison dwarf!
