i wouldnt want one if i got one, ive got huge respect for anyone who turns one down

i always thought they were for people who went above and beyond, and werent paid millions for it, like people who give thier lives to helping others, people who care for a relative who is ill etc

not sports stars, paid millions for some of the best jobs in the world..
those awards man nothing to me, i dont like the royal family either

That's what it should be for. Of course, I guess if a celebrity is extremely charitable or humble then they should get an award, too.

Honours are given to anyone who excells in their field, they are representing England against opponents from around the world. I think they deserve their awards, dont forget even beckhams got one lol.

And patrick Stewart is a highly respected Shakesperean actor with a career of around 50 years.

So it's only because they are good at something?
But why is he highly respected? Is he a nice guy? Or is it just because he "excels in acting"?

A common misconception about the honours system is that the majority is made up of these famous people, however that's not the truth.

The vast majority is made up by honest hard working people who have excelled in their field whether it be charity, development of health or wellbeing, fighting for the country, outstanding work in their community, progression of science etc. A part of this sysem should be those that have represented their nation in a major sporting arena, as often they have endured struggles in the early years before getting there, or if not struggles from a financial sense, have certainly progressed through the lower formula / development by excelling in most steps on the way. That is true whether talking about F1, Athletics, Swimming, Football and many other sports.

The fact these people are 'celebrities' is a reflection of our country's culture and not of the individuals who happen to become celebrities through no fault of their own. Even actors often have to endure years of rejection, massive competition before achieving that 'A List' status.

I like your post. Can you give me an example of a person who was not a celebrity to begin with who got the honor?

At least for the first half of the season...

Patrick Stewart? He's like one of the best actors on the planet. Go on the iPlayer and watch Hamlet.

And that means he should be called 'Sir'? Come on...

That statement doesn't really hold true... Over the course of the season, I would say Sebastian Vettel was faster but made some mistakes and had bad luck. Was Jenson the best driver of the season, yes, he won the world drivers championship so by default he was the best driver of the season, that doesn't always mean fastest!

Besides, winning a F1 championship shouldn't mean automatic MBE, every time a British sportsman or teams wins a major event, they get automatic honours, I simply don't believe that sportsmen that are highly paid to do what they do get honoured because they win a championship, Jenson doesn't even live in the UK anymore!!!

He won more races than anyone else. Ergo, fastest.
