Personally I don't believe that sportsmen should receive Queen's honours, they are paid very good money to perform... anyone that wins a major championship is almost certain to get an honour. In my opinion there are fair more deserving people who deserve an MBE, people who do things for charity for example!

I'm not English and I have no idea what the qualifications are for this honor, but it seems as though people are chosen solely because they are "talented". Shouldn't the Queen (or whoever picks it) look at their character, also?
Button might be World Champion, but what about his integrity? What of Hamilton? Is he a nice guy, or did he get it just because he was the World Champion?

"Services to motorsport" or something equally vague like that.

Heh, yup, i agree. I think i read on the BBC site that nearly 1000 awards are being made this year- kinda makes the shine off the whole thing for me. Patrick Stewart knighted? Come on.

Technically speaking the honours are for 'for people of outstanding merit'. I guess that is fair enough then, but some of the fields of achievement are a bit stupid. The whole thing really smacks of 'popularity contest' at times too.

It's almost as if the Queen doesn't care or she is very generous.
 Isn't that the guy from Star Trek? What makes him so special?
Name me a stupid field of achievement, please?
And yes, it screams popularity contest.

i wouldnt want one if i got one, ive got huge respect for anyone who turns one down

i always thought they were for people who went above and beyond, and werent paid millions for it, like people who give thier lives to helping others, people who care for a relative who is ill etc

not sports stars, paid millions for some of the best jobs in the world..
those awards man nothing to me, i dont like the royal family either

Honours are given to anyone who excells in their field, they are representing England against opponents from around the world. I think they deserve their awards, dont forget even beckhams got one lol.

And patrick Stewart is a highly respected Shakesperean actor with a career of around 50 years.

A common misconception about the honours system is that the majority is made up of these famous people, however that's not the truth.

The vast majority is made up by honest hard working people who have excelled in their field whether it be charity, development of health or wellbeing, fighting for the country, outstanding work in their community, progression of science etc. A part of this sysem should be those that have represented their nation in a major sporting arena, as often they have endured struggles in the early years before getting there, or if not struggles from a financial sense, have certainly progressed through the lower formula / development by excelling in most steps on the way. That is true whether talking about F1, Athletics, Swimming, Football and many other sports.

The fact these people are 'celebrities' is a reflection of our country's culture and not of the individuals who happen to become celebrities through no fault of their own. Even actors often have to endure years of rejection, massive competition before achieving that 'A List' status.

Patrick Stewart? He's like one of the best actors on the planet. Go on the iPlayer and watch Hamlet.

Anywho, it's ABOUT FREAKING TIME Ross Brawn got an OBE.

But more importantly, he's Jean Luc Picard, Captain of the Starship Enterprise!
