I believe that all teenage boys (it may have been a specific age...maybe 14?) as of 1939 were required to join Hitler Youth. His family was extremely anti-Nazi and they were Catholic; his brother is a priest (or maybe a bishop) and his sister helped them in their religious duties. He was drafted into the war and then he deserted.
I don't really pay specific attention to the pope but I do know some information. I will agree that he is very conservative, and if what you say is true about the pedo priests, I don't know what to say. What do you consider "stupid reactionary politics"?

Yes, yes, the Catholic Church is quite embarrassing and pathetic at times. The thing is, no matter what or where, they are completely against these things, and I don't agree with that. I don't think that God will hate the people that disagree with some things.
