I can understand hiring one of them, but both seems a tad optimistic. Mind you, of the experienced talent on offer, who's better?

its a daft pairing if you ask me.

there both decent qualifiers but have no race pace of haven't shown any.

infact they have a very regular habit of going backwards in races.

so you can expect them to qualify in the points and finish out of them.

Doesn't really matter does it? Lotus will be duking it out with the other minnows anyway.

Gascoyne has brought out the best in Trulli before on several occasions, i wouldn't be surprised if he can do it once more. We haven't seen a good race drive from Kovalainen in ages though.

Hm, does he have a stealth prod in the style of Pat??? :P

I think it was a combination of JT and HK not being able to find another decent drive after being sacked by their respective teams and Lotus wanting to show off by hiring F1 veterans. Besides the ability to develop the car rather than having to prove their ability like you'd expect to see in a newbie is worth something for a new team.

On paper looking at their results you'd think this would be a bad pairing but I have a sneaking suspicion that Kovalainen will surprise a few people. I'm not so sure about Trulli, he seems to start strong and then fade away in the later stages, which could be said of Kovy in the last few seasons, but I believe they'll be a good challenge for each other.

And there's no pressure as no-one expects the new teams to do well this coming season unlike Toyota and McLaren did in the last few seasons.

I agree. I think its a wise decision to go with 2 drivers with F1 experience instead of going the Toro Rosso route and hiring 2 inexperienced drivers.
