F1live:
Ex-Formula One boss David Richards has said large levels of expenditure on irrelevant technologies in F1 could lead to the sport's demise.
[...]
Richards added that the recently-elected FIA president Jean Todt will have to ensure F1 spends more money on technology that can be transferred to road cars, rather than irrelevant technology such as aerodynamics.

"I think it's very appropriate that Jean Todt has taken over the reins of F1 just at this turning point, because I don't think we can carry on the way we have in the past with the excesses we have seen in various fields," he said. "Probably one of the best examples is in aerodynamics, where we talk about relevance of motorsport technology and yet, today, I can't think of anything less relevant than aerodynamics to the general automotive industry. Sure, it has a minor part to play, but when one compares it to efficiencies in other areas such as the drive toward the electric vehicle and generative braking systems, I think motorsport has to take a very serious look at itself."

i don't see why F1 has to present anything relevent to the road car industry i mean millions are spent on football player development, from football boot, to physio - to training techniques etc..

and pretty much none of that will help me get about better.

Why can't F1 just be about the best car with the best driver going as fast as possible with a defined set of rules.

F1 will be fine as long as the move away from big manufactures is accompanied by cost cutting and sustainable economics.

The key is having the outlandish technologies interesting to people, it doesn't have to be relevant.

That view would have been valid last season, but now most of the manufacturers have gone, it's a pretty redundant point to make.

Surely BTCC or DTM is a far more "relevant" motorsport for feeding technologies back into production cars? Also, road cars are not supposed to be used for racing, so by his logic, are we going to expect F1 cars to have "Big boots and room for the whole family, side impact bars & a sun roof"?

I think what Mario Theisson said was while all the people around the world are watching F1 that is taking xmillion cars off the road, and therefore saving fuel and saving the earth and saving polar bears.
