The buses were better before Ken Livingstone ruined the traffic in London. If I was traveling anywhere nearer to here than Greece, I'd take the train. I hate flying, it's such a disorientating way to get somewhere. I wouldn't mind it so much if it wasn't for the airports.

I really don't like modern trains, they maybe fast but they are dull; old steam trains are much more interesting, the sounds, the smells... the smell of diesel doesn't do much for me; and electric trains do nothing for me; but you have to appreciate the technology behind it, especially maglev trains.

I think that whole era was a wonderful age for design of clothes, furniture, cars, trains, buildings, liners, the lot!

I so agree. I love looking at pictures from that era.

Love trains, always have since I was a kid,love the noise and the motion and lets not forget that childish amazement that it can actually stand up on those rails. There's also something very grand about the stations. The logisitcs as well has always interested me, pulling into liverpool street and watching the other lines all joining up side by side.

haha we're the same, I loved watching trains when I was little. I remember I used to play with my train sets for hours, and I loved watching Thomas the tank engine on tv.

While I agree that nothing tops the amazingness of steam engines (especially streamliners), I still think high speed trains are fascinating to look at.

What I find more interesting than trains is the architecture of the railway system; the bridges and tunnels, one of the most well known of these bridges joined my home town with Cornwall; the Royal Albert Railway Bridge built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in 1859:

That bridge is amazing! It's actually a suspension bridge with the towers pushed apart rather than pulled from behind by cables. It's a work of genius!

I agree. It's amazing the speeds they can attain, but man they're ugly.

TRAIN APPRECIATION THREAD !!



I absolutely hate trains! Only good thing about them is that they are usually on-time, but if they are not it completely screws my journey up when I have to make changes.

I especially hate the London Underground, its always busy and not good to have so many stairs when I have a heavy suitcase to carry around.

Old steam engines are pretty though.
