My Dad is a train spotter you would not love high speed trains if you had spent so much time sat in the cold and rain (normal euro weather) waiting for one to turn up. yes I had no childhood.

The US used to have a fairly extensive rail system back in the days, but in a very shortsighted and greedy way, it got dismantled and replaced by trucks and airplanes

it does suprise me that steam engines did not stay in the USA for longer as from what I remember from my geography lessons Coal is easy to get to also Wood is plentyful.

Actually I would, I loved trains when I was a kid. Go figure, I like Planes, trains and automobiles. Haha those are such a guy thing to like.

I so so so agree. We had such a good rail system in the early 20th century, and now its poo. Damn right wingers think we would be wasting money on high speed rail, when we would actually be saving money in the long run. Now we only travel by car or plane

Yeah and now we depend too much on foreign oil for our cars and planes. All the money for transportation back in the old days stayed right here in the USA, but the railroads weren't looking at that. They were too concerned with maintenance costs for the steamers.

Late 50's when the interstate system was being built, and commercial air travel was starting to become the norm. I read that you Brits made a brand new steam engine called 'the Tornado.'

IIRC the last steam train operated in the 70s. I forget but you can learn all about it at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn.
I wouldn't know, but I always thought the demise of rail was the result of a lack of business more than government decisions. People never use rail to travel here. It's hella expensive. As for freight I don't know.

Looks like the Trulli train is also cancelled.

i have had many 'issues' with public transport.. the only way i will use it is if i have too or i cannot afford to own a car! [then i probably wouldnt be able to afford public transport tho!]

The rail service is shoddy in the UK compared with the rest of Western Europe. The British government are looking to build a national high speed rail network which would be good. i use the trains a lot and it is annoying but I think it's my favourite way to travel medium distances, you see so much more from trains than you do from motorways

Must confess I use it loads aswell.Where I am it's well handy to get to London.I'm 90 miles away but can be there in about 80 minutes on the train,loads quicker than by car and less hassle.So if they do put the high speed links in I will be laughing.

But as soon as I go cross country things go downhill and its usually late.Think I get away with it here being near the end of the line.I don't think it's too expensive either.
