Man distracted by bird drives Bugatti into marsh

LA MARQUE, Texas – A man blamed a low-flying pelican and a dropped cell phone for his veering his million-dollar sports car off a road and into a salt marsh near Galveston. The accident happened about 3 p.m. Wednesday on the frontage road of Interstate 45 northbound in La Marque, about 35 miles southeast of Houston.

The Lufkin, Texas, man told of driving his luxury, French-built Bugatti Veyron when the bird distracted him, said La Marque police Lt. Greg Gilchrist. The motorist dropped his cell phone, reached to pick it up and veered off the road and into the salt marsh. The car was half-submerged in the brine about 20 feet from the road when police arrived.

Gilchrist said he doesn't know if the car was salvageable, but in his words, "Salt water isn't good for anything." He says the man, whose identity hasn't been released, was not injured.

A 2006 Bugatti Veyron was recently offered for sale in Jonesboro, Ark., for $1.25 million.

Actually I do not find it odd at all in the sense that 99% of the time when I see an exotic car the driver is on his cellphone with that "I'm so important" look on their faces . We have a law now here in H-town that forbid's talking on a cellphone while traveling thru a school zone but there is a law that will hopefully pass that disallow's cellphone usage while driving .

I cannot tell you how many times a day I see a driver causing nothing more than a dangerous obstacle because they are on their cellphones !!!!

At least back home in the UK; using a handheld cellphone while driver is illegal, it has to be handsfree... but I still think it's a distraction, if you need to take a call, find a safe place to pull over and take the call; if a safe place doesn't present itself in a timely manner; call the person back when you find a safe place... it's not rocket science!

I agree, even handsfree is a distraction. At least here in NY handheld cellphones are not allowed while driving, but I see them dumbarses holding it to their ear all the time

it might be the law in the uk, but its still really common for people to talk on the phone and in the car. They then whine about the police not having anything better to do. The mentaility is there to do it, people have very err ingrained opinions about crime I feel.
