Mercedes might be considering supplying another team, but which one? If it is one of the newer teams, McLaren are unlikely to care. Red Bull, however, could be a potential title threat next season for McLaren, so vetoing plans to give them a supply of what is the best engine on the grid seems prudent.

I agree. They still probably kick themselves for 'allowing' Mercedes power plants in the Brawn. Who would have thunked? Granted, this past season it didn't really matter as the McLaren was not up to snuff for the first half of the championship. But who knows about next year?

Crappy internet translation:

McLaren vetoes Red Bull Those of Woking do not want to share Mercedes The danger for Dennis is called Vettel. Christian Horner, the landlord of Red Bull Racing wanted to drive to its single-seaters with the best motor in circulation the FO 108W, the German machine of Mercedes that has demonstrated not to have rival in terms of power, reduced consumption and reliability during this season, in fact the motors of Stuttgart have conquered the victory in ten occasions, against six of Renault and one of Ferrari. A chill has had to run through the body of Rum Dennis in his exile in Woking (finalized after exit of Mosley), that surely has been more intense than the “palpitations” of Martin Whitmarsh when knowing that Red Bull decided on the V8 Mercedes, to equip its single-seater during the next season. The mere image of a Formula 1 car from the privileged mind of its ex--guru Adrian Newey, equipped with Mercedes motor and in the hands of the greatest talent, and future, of paddock, Sebastian Vettel, has had to wake up the leaders of McLaren in a panic too many nights, who have "pulled the contract” and they have stood firm before their Mercedes partners. McLaren owns a right to veto that allows them to control to whom Mercedes provides motors, after the nightmare of Brawn GP year, the possibilities of providing Red Bull with a lethal weapon were potentially too harmful and they have said no, and so the energy drink company will again drive its “wings” with the Renault motors, something that could go a long way towards preventing the mark of the rhombus' exit from F1, when being related to a winning equipment as it is Red Bull. McLaren every time is more like an uncomfortable element for Mercedes that owns 40% of Mclaren's shares but little power of decision. In fact the search of a “more malleable partner” was in the mind of Norbert Haug (head of the Mercedes operations). The necessity of a strong partner on the part of Ross Brawn and the will of the Germans made the sound of wedding bells almost inevitable. The problem of this love triangle was McLaren, that again vetoed the entrance of the mark of the star in the championship-winning team. The Germans have this time not yielded and through Abu Dhabi AA-BAR (that is holder of almost 10% of Mercedes-Benz) it has secured 75% of Brawn GP. The presence of Ron Dennis in Marine Yas was not entirely unrelated to this decision, the contract with the Germans finalizes in 2011 and with complete certainty it will not continue, Dennis and his partner of all the life, Mansour Ojjeh, are looking for the way to recover the 40% and are negotiating with BMW to secure the section of F1 motors of the Bavarian house and to culminate therefore a process, that would convert Mclaren in constructors in every sense of the word instead of mere “assemblers" (as Enzo Ferrari described them). This way McLaren would try to imitate to the historial and mythical marque, Ferrari, by producing both car and motor in house.

Interesting. But Vettel the greatest talent on the grid?? Nah :nono:

Its a matter of opinion, which is why the opinion expressed in the piece is as valid as any other opinion regarding who is the greatest talent. Anyone saying that Hamilton, Massa, Raikkonen, Alonso, Vettel etc. is the greatest talent would have a reasonable case and it would be difficult to argue against any of them definitively. Plus the peice is badly translated as Juliet said so the wording may have been different, they may have said 'protege' or something less strong.

It did say 'the greatest'. I speak spanish, but I cba to spend half an hour translating it properly, so I just corrected the worst bits that the internet translator churned out.

He was good in UAE, I though he was dangerous in Brazil. He has good pace but then so did Nakajima when he got his first drive for Williams, people were raving about him after that race. Kobayashi has had one decent race and one very good race. I'm not about to p*ss my pants over that. He might be good, he might be average, he might be the greatest of all time. I'm not sure how anyone is supposed to tell at this stage. He certainly looked like nothing remotely special in GP2.

Cools, good to know, it's hard to know what exactly is being said in the papers, just like the Bernie - Ayrton Senna comments a few weeks ago. :) tbh, I thought it was more coherent than anything I've gotten out of an internet translator. I said it was poor because you said so yourself, I didn't mean to insult your translation skills!

you know i'm inclined to agree with you. I've never much liked Massa but you can't really argue with some of his race wins, particularly the ones in which Kimi Raikkonen, Michael Schumacher, Fernando Alonso and/or Lewis Hamilton couldn't match him for pace in competitive machinery. Personally, I'd rather have any of the drivers I mentioned in the original post with the addition of Nico Rosberg if i was picking for an F1 team.
