If this passes, it would be a big blow:banghead:
The Brits seem to be way behind in their handling of this issue, which with the aging population in the western world will become increasingly relevant.
The Dutch as so often are socially the most progressive.
Switzerland is in danger of going backwards

I used to be a member of Exit back in Switzerland, alas I haven't yet found an equivalent stateside.

Were way behind in the handling of every issue though, nothing new there :banghead:

Cant see what the problem with it all is TBH, if somebody is sick terminally ill or what ever and they wish to end it quick rather than suffer before being turned into a vegetable then they should have the right to die IMO

An intresting topic this one

It is like abortion I think it is up to the person involved to decide

With abortion the life being taken has no say in it though (obviously), In this case the life being taken is through their own decision.

but at what stage is it classed as life instead of just a growth?
is it worth creating life if it will not loved?
what sort of life would a child have if unloved and uncared for?

Im not saying im against abortion, just that it differs slightly from assisted suicide

I got carried away with the post to be honest. my original meaning was at what point does a pregnancy become a life? because before that abortion is just a case of removing an unwanted growth.

The unwanted growth is infact a human life form

Its illegal here in Australia, recently a man who was quadriplegic won a court case not to be fed by the hospital caring for him as it was his right to be able to choose to be fed or not. So stupidly it was legal for him to die a slow death on his own choosing rather than a humane death which would also be of his own choosing... stupid world we live in.

On the abortion issue; 18 - 24 weeks; depending on your doctors policy, is the latest an abortion can take place, but it is considered a life form almost as soon as conception, I agree with abortion because rather than have a child born into abject poverty and have a very poor standard of life. On the subject of assisted suicide; I wholeheartedly agree with it; I believe people have the right to end their lives early if their quality of life will become so poor that it's more like a punishment than life. I have been touched by this issue myself so it's something that is very personal to me. My mother had a severe stroke after a long illness and spent the last 10 years of her life in a nursing home. She could talk; or move or even use the bathroom herself. Because my mother and I had talked about it previously I know that she would have rather died that have to endure those final 10 years of humiliation. But assisted suicide wasn't an option for her in the UK and financially we couldn't afford to travel abroad for the procedure. Myself personally I would rather be able to choose to die than be a burden on my family, feeling useless...

Until the UK starts to accept socio-legal research as being just as valuable and reliable as doctrinal legal research as a basis for creating legislation / maintaining the common law, these laws will not change. Hence in Scotland for example, both assisted suicide and abortion are illegal.

Thankfully, over the past 20 years or so, there has been a growing amount of credibility givin to socio-legal studies, as more within the profession are using and accepting mixed methodologies. I'd give it at the most another 10-20 years and the UK will be brought into line with many other European states in this regard.
