Formula One related discussion.

This is something that Ewan and myself had a chat about. In my opinion, Stewart was the first driver to take Formula One driving to a more professional dimension, by taking a much analytical approach to Grands Prix. I mean no disrespect to other drivers in and before the 1970s, but many of them would not hold a candle to more recent drivers. In and before the '70s, it was acceptable for a driver just to be fast and either brave or foolhardy. Relatively, the car technologies etc were primitive, so little testing or set up work was required, and drivers did not need to be anywhere near as fit as modern drivers are because they did not experience the same G-forces etc. The '80s was the decade that shaped modern Formula One. Prost was not just analytical when racing, but before the Grands Prix even got started. He had a good idea of what he would do the race, with one or two back-up plans, and was prepared to play the long-term game to win the title. Then Senna came along and built on this, being a lot more involved in the design and testing of the car (though he was never quite as savvy as Prost in terms of racecraft), and brought other tricks to the party: athletic fitness (his resting heart rate was in the low 40s); and scintillating speed, which came about from his unique driving style and sublime feel for his cars and the racing conditions. Therefore, modern Formula One drivers are as they are chiefly because of Prost and Senna. For me, they are unquestionably the two greatest drivers ever, with Senna probably being the greatest ever, purely because he arrived a half a generation or a full generation after Prost.

Lewis is far to high up on that list. He has certainly had his accomplishments but he has also had just as many bone headed mistakes. There are many drivers with one championship under their belt who have never rear ended a car in pit lane or thrown away a championship three races in a row. If it were not a british newspaper's list....he would probably not be on the list at all....same as Button. Button is a good driver, but once everyone else got their diffusers working....his dominance quickly ended. Without the diffuser debacle this year, he would not be WDC.

I disagree.

Some of the drives Lewis has pulled of have been exceptional he should be further up.

Especial since drives like Jenson and Kimi and Alonso are above him.

mate you could nit pick the whole damn list and do the what ifs..... end of the day drivers drive with what they have got and under the circumstances they are given. I would never begrudge a champion... not even Schumacher who had it nice and easy for far too long

come now guys .. are you going to pick a fight with everybody that dont put lewis first in their lives ??

Quite the contrary Tony. If anyone did put Lewis as the 'best F1 driver of all time' then I'd probably, not quite "pick a fight" with them, but at least have a discussion about why I think they're wrong.

No one is saying Lewis is the absolute best, just that, to a lot of us, he's far better than Jenson. But, like I said earlier, the full list is ridiculous in my opinion.

I think it is unfair to put anyone current on a list like this. Who is to know if drivers like Kimi, Alonso, Lewis are spent forces and will be classed as a waste of space in a few years time. On the other hand one of them might win the next 10 WDC in which case they would be a lot higher.
