Showed 'Apocalypse Now' (the greatest Hollywood film ever made!) to my girlfriend last night and she thought it was 'alright' :banghead:

It's a good film but I wouldn't call it the greatest Hollywood movie ever. It's a bit of a marmite movie, love it or hate it.

Yeah...I know some people that hate Apocalipse now...I just can't understand them...they say that the movie is slow and non-sense...

Well, like some (rude) people say here in Brazil, taste is like an As*...each one has yours :D

I bought Redux and that makes more sense, TBH I could not choose between Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket as to which is the best.

Personally I'd go with Full Metal Jacket

I can totally understand people hating Apocalypse Now, it's very dramatic and not understated in any way and rubs people up the wrong way. It's not a particularly enjoyable film either, i find it to be quite hard work. The thing that gives me so much respect for it is something i read in Empire. Apparently, the film was heavily criticized upon release for being a work of pure fantasy but it was subsequently defended by a group of Vietnam veterans who still claim to this day that it is the one film that most accurately portrays the experience of being in the Vietnam war. :yikes: Can you imagine!?

BAhhh...just because you re-mentioned The thin red line, Sean Penn came to my mind and I see i forgot "Mystic River"
I completly agree that it depicts war better than most of movies.
Of course there are some heroism on the movie, but I like the focus on the emptying of the things that make us human, the morbidness that increases in the soldier, the reality that death imposes on their psychology...

You know, I've never seen Mystic River, but I've heard its really good. I think I'll pick it up next time. You know thats Sean Penn as a stoner in my Avatar. :hehe:
The thing I also like about Thin Red Line is that it shows that you dont always get a good leader when you're in the military, and all some people care about is climbing the ranks.

Black Hawk Down is really good too! I just forgot to mention
The kingdom - I don't know this movie...
Full Metal Jacket - I've never seen. but I know it's Kubrick's, well... I don't know why i haven't rented this movie yet. going to rent both this weekend.

The Kingdom isnt like the typical on the front line war movie, but its good nevertheless. And you gotta see Full Metal Jacket dude, you'll love it its such a good movie.

War is one of my favourite genre =)
I know I forgot some good movies too(not only in this genre)
I'll update the lists by the time the movies come to my mind..=)

War movies are my favorite too. I think I like it just because of the male bondage.

Here I remembered more good war movies. :)

Dont know if this would be considered a war movie but I absolutely love it.

Oh and dude, the people who made Band of Brothers are coming out with another mini-series called "The Pacific." Its in WWII and obviously based on the Pacific Theater, and it looks really good. I dont have HBO though so I think Ill have to wait for it to come on dvd. :(

the Band of Brothers book was terrible. People always say the books are better than the films but not in this case.

War and Scifi are my fav's

one Vietnam movie I never rated was platoon.

Saving Private Ryan was quite good

I have watched a few episodes of 'Band of Brothers' and liked it a great deal.

Band of Brothers is fantastic, I watched it far too many times considering it's a 10 hour series. My favourite episode is Bastogne, probably followed by Day of Days and The Breaking Point. I may have to rewatch the full thing again now.

The book was a fairly good read but nowhere near as good as the television series.

Thanks for the heads up on 'The Pacific' Rivelution, that's going on my must see list.

Band of Brothers is amazing, I love it so much I bought the box set. I like all the episodes, but my favorite has to be Crossroads because its mostly about Winters. What a guy, I have so much respect for him. He's the kind of person everyone should look up to.

I think the reason the book wasnt so great is because it wasnt written like a story, more like a report of what Easy company went through. I only read like one third of the book.

Oh and for those who didnt notice. The main character in "The Pacific" was the little boy in the first Jurassic Park.

Yeah i really liked Winters - but the whole of Band Of Brothers is Excellent. That New Pacific's theatre series looks very promising. I hope the BBC get it like they did with Band Of Brothers.

I forgot about Crossraods, that's another great episode. I bought the box set too and I tend to rewatch up to (and including) The Breaking Point before stopping. I get a bit depressed after that. :(

I think the BBC will get it, but probably not until after HBO shows all 10 episodes.
