It feels like F1 has breathed a massive sigh of relief now that the World Championship has been settled – and now everyone has gone to ground for a week before the finale in Abu Dhabi. It is surprisingly quiet in the F1 gossip world. No doubt things will start to get serious on the negotiating front once the season is done. Everything seems to be a little blocked at the moment because we are awaiting the fate of BMW Sauber. The last I heard was that Timo Glock will end up at Renault and if Kimi Raikkonen is not at McLaren then I would be shocked. We also need to hear from Toyota that they are serious about staying. Until some of these things happen the driver market will be blocked. It is like those fantastic falling domino extravaganzas. When something fails to fall over everything stops until it is nudged forward again…

It is interesting that when I got home (finally) I started looking to see what I had missed in terms of news and found nothing but rehashes of old rumours. This did not really surprise me because the folk in the F1 world (the ones who really do the travelling rather than the Web folk that pretend they are involved) are now really tired. It has been a very long haul in the last month or so and are ready to stop for the winter. There are the usual signs of “battle fatigue”, with the autumn colds that people pick up because they are run down and so on. It is not the sport that wears you down. The racing has been great this year and Interlagos provided a terrific story. Nor is it really the politics. This year there has relatively little off track drama beyond the obviously disastrous Singapore 2008 scandal and the dim and distant McLaren-Melbourne kerfuffle. What gets you in the end is the travelling – even if you are good at it. This morning on the plane I was seated behind a bunch of middle aged American ladies and I was idly listening to them telling one another how tired they were and how they had not slept “a wink” and how they usually bought two seats on a plane to be sure they had enough room etc etc. I smiled a wry smile. I guess I am so used to it that a flit from Europe to the US really is nothing. I don’t even consider it a long flight. I am lucky, I guess, in that I can sleep anywhere and do. This means that I get accused now and then of being narcoleptic. I don’t know if I am or not but I do know that that it is great to be able to sleep quickly and deeply and then be refreshed and back in action straight away. If I could not do that I think I would have fallen apart years ago.

I cannot remember who it was but the other day someone remarked that travelling with the F1 circus was a job that is really only for tough people because it is so hard. I don’t know if that is true or not. I just do what I have to do and sometimes a little more if it is cheaper. It was funny the other evening in Sao Paulo; there were a group of F1 hard-liners (you can always spot real F1 folk in an airport after a race because they are the only ones NOT in team gear) waiting for various planes and marvelling at the different routings. Logically, an Englishman would get on a plane from Sao Paulo to London direct, but here was a group with one going to Lisbon, one to Amsterdam, one to Chicago, another to Madrid and somewhere in the airport there was even a lunatic going home by way of Dubai. It is the logic of air travel. You can usually go where you want to go, but if you want to do it in a cost-effective manner you have to go where the prices take you. While we were chatting Norbert Haug arrived and was talking about the latest F1 scandal which was being reported in the Brazilian papers about Bernie Ecclestone saying that Ayrton Senna’s death was good for Formula 1…

Inwardly I groaned. Yes, I had heard the story, I said, and by a pure coincidence I knew all about it and I had even heard what Bernie had actually said. How? Because a Brazilian journalist came to me with his tape recorder and asked me to listen to Bernie’s word so that he could understand exactly what he meant. I listened and I explained that he was not saying that Senna’s death was good for F1 but that “unfortunately the publicity that was created by Senna’s death resulted in the sport attracting a large number of new fans”. I warned the Brazilian to be careful because there was clearly a danger of the remarks being misinterpreted if he was not careful in the way he wrote the story. I also explained that the same phenomenon had occurred in NASCAR after the death of Dale Earnhardt and made the point that it was an interesting reflection on human nature that such things occur.

I was very disappointed to hear later that the story came out saying exactly what I told the journalist to avoid saying. Sadly, I am rarely surprised these days. Newspapers will do whatever they wish to do to sell more copies and their journalists are under pressure to sensationalize everything.

Small wonder the F1 media does not get much respect when they do things like this. They do not deserve respect.

I heard a rumor that Ari Vatanen will organize a party at the pit café Silverstone for the journos if they continue coming up with juicy stories about Max and Bernie.
Entertainment will be by some old famous music hall man and there will be a bongo band from Uganda playing Finish folk music.
Irish whiskey will be free at the bar along with special deal holidays in the middle east.
