I know, Juliet, that you are relativist, so can't really deal with somebody telling things as they are. Often, there are a number of sides in an argument, but, occasionally, one party is right and the others are just wrong. So I will happily say that Fox News is an absolute disgrace of a channel, and will refuse to tolerate its intolerance. Fox News' editing bias is incredible, and the views of its presenters and hosts are scandalous. Take some of their latest ones. According to Glenn Beck, Barack Obama is a racist who hates everything about white culture. Bill O'Reilly thinks black people are simpletons and that doctors who carry out abortions are murder. So, rather than get all postmodern, I'd rather speak out against such views.

Me, a relativist?? God, no. As anyone who knows me well would tell you, more than often I'm the one who's 'telling things as they are'. But I also go by the old adage of having two ears and only one mouth, one should listen twice as much as one talks, and I often find that people I respect have completely opposite opinions to me, especially over such contentious issues as morals, ethics and religion.

So I'll agree with you to the extent that Barack Obama is clearly not a racist, and black people are clearly not simpletons and anyone who suggests as much is either stupid or bigoted. But would I go so far as to generalise that everyone who has anything to do with Fox is 'creationist scum'? Hmm, maybe not...

Economically, I am a bit more on the conservative side. I believe socialism won't ever work, mainly because humans are not entirely rational machines. The absolutely legendary Dostoyevsky deals with this very well succinctly in chapters seven to nine his novella, Notes from the Underground (1864). A decent quote from the work is: Man, 'like a chess player, loves the process of the game, not the end of it'. That is to say, socialism (and other extremist ideologies, too) seeks to remove emotions, self-determination, and all of the other things which make human life so rich and varied - exactly what it is to be human. Capitalism is very, very, very far from perfect, but it is the least worst system available to humans. Personally, I believe in a more moral brand of Capitalism, which seeks to be compassionate, manages competition, etc. The West is not quite there yet.

Socially, though, I am very liberal. I absolutely detest attempts to curb freedom of expression, racism, gay-bashing, governments spying on their people, and the like. But what I hate above all is how genuine liberal values have been hijacked by Postmodern relativism - an ideology which still exists to an extent in many universities today, which has been responsible for New Labour in the United Kingdom - which contends that all points of view are more or less equal. Sometimes, one definitely must be open-minded and tolerant, as there are things we just do not know enough about. But sometimes a particular person or group is wrong, and they should be told that they are wrong. So, when a buffoon like O'Reilly states that black people are less intelligent than white people just because of their race - not because of social factors, etc. - people should refuse to tolerate such an intolerant view.
