He's an attacker in truth. The system looks better when Beckham's on the right because he holds back and crosses from deeper, covering the gap better than Lennon does. It puts the responsbility firmly on Barry when ol' Dave isn't there.

Speaking of defensive midfielders, did anyone think Owen Hargreaves looked horribly uncomfortable as a pundit?

I liked how the person who threw it on the pitch was a Liverpool supporter... and they then pixellated his face when they showed footage of him on the news later!! Dumbass!!

How was that allowed?! I'm no football expert but I'm fairly sure that if an outside influence is involved then it's a no goal.

According to the referee's association it should have been disallowed and a drop ball given on the edge of the box... but it's funnier this way.

I stopped watching football ages ago, but when I heard about this it reminded me slightly of that FA Cup match between one of the Manchester teams and Sheffield United (the team I was following at that time - and they had Captain Yawn Bryan Robson in charge) when the fans of the Manchester team dumped a load of balloons on the pitch infront of their goal area and the confusion lead to them conceding a goal.

What a great day's football, Liverpool were laughable without Gerrard and Torres. What a complete tit that fan was, I'd be surprised if he escaped intensive care for that one.

And if anyone watched the Portsmouth v Tottenham highlights, how amazing were some of Gomez's saves?? That guy really does only blow very hot or very cold!

I'm a Liverpool fan but even I have to laugh at the absurdity of the beach ball goal; frankly Liverpool were horrendous without Torres and Gerrard and as Rafa Benitez said "we weren't good enough" even with the freak goal, Liverpool had 85 minutes to make amends and failed to do so!

I made a point of this on my blog at the start of the season but since then Liverpool have played much better than the Sunderland game without Alonso but with Gerrard/Torres. Liverpool are lacking top four talent without Gerrard and Torres, agreed that letting Alonso go was the biggest mistake Liverpool could have made!
