Some pundits said that Obama changed the way nations interact with each other, especially how America behaves on the world stage, i.e., multilateral dialogues vs. unilateral ultimatums, etc., which obviously increases chances for peace. In the past 30 years or so, Democratic presidents always had to show that they are tough or the American people wouldn't approve of them. Obama tries a different way internationally and is taking a big risk in doing so. A little encouragement could help, but the prize could also translate into pressure - the announcement came on the very day when Obama was in high-level discussions to come to a decision about troops in Afghanistan.

I imagine he's giving the money to charity?

Armchair republicans are saying he's waging war against 2 countries. Excuse me that's twisting things. The US is in conflict IN those countries, propping their governments, sure that might be as bad, but it's not the same. It's the opposite. Secondly Obama didn't start those conflicts, it was the oil hungry Conservatives that illegally invaded them.

Yup, the whole $1.4m or so - will be interesting to which he's going to donate.

to the people who gave him the prize?

Still I can't really see why right now he warrants it, surley there are many more people who have done more, but just low profile ones?

The Nobel Organisation is nothing but a political grouping. It's absolutely laughable that Obama is getting the award now, and that's coming from somebody who supports him!

Don't forget the nominations came out when he was only in his 10th or 11th day in office.

Most people here (on the left and the right) seem to wonder about this as well. I guess the award has gone to those who "hope"to do something instead of having already done it.

I believe Obama has done much for the United States image outside of the confines of the US than both Bush's did in their combined 12 years in power. Obama has put a lot of time and effort into putting plans into action, obviously not too much has happened yet because of the slow political machine. The fact he was nominated for this years peace prize is a bit of joke as he could have only be nominated for being America's first black president; but you could argue that gave the world hope of change and peace in our time! If he won next years Nobel peace prize then it would be much more credible.

All other prizes aren't given out for what people hope to achieve. If that were the case, I'd be given my PhD now, instead of having to slave my arse off and pay money for it. Prizes should be given out for achievement, and Obama has achieved diddly squat at the moment. In another few years down the line, we'll know better how good or bad a President Obama has been. And I sincerely hope it's the former, as I really like him. This was an anti-Bush administration prize, not a pro-Obama one. I wouldn't blame Obama, however, like the creationist scum on FOX News do. It was probably difficult for Obama to refuse the prize and he did seem a little embarrassed about it.

A bit harsh. :hehe:

Seriously, though, part of the reason the human race needs a nobel peace prize is because people show so little respect to those who hold a differing opinion to them. 'Creationist scum' for example, is not the most constructive phrase I've ever heard...

Fox News is beyond constructive criticism I feel.
