I remember being able to overtake and be overtaken all the time with early F1 cars. I found it was possible to go right up to the back and then go without any of this nonsence. I drove several types from Alta, Connaught, Vanwall and 250F Mas and none of these car caused problems. I would also say that hanging our tails round corners was much better for the public.

Now I know that a lot was wrong too, but I really did not think that the slower laps spoiled the event. Take ALL of the wings off, that's what I say. It would really sort the men from the boys.

My interest has varied over the years, the Schumacher winning everything era was a low point for my F1 watching and this year has been another low point; all the huff and puff about the new regulations promoting more overtaking has come to the square root of nothing. Suzuka has plenty of overtaking opportunities yet next to no-one made a real attempt to overtake, the only high point was Kovy overtaking Fisi out of the pitlane exit. When I started watching F1 back in the 1991 it was exciting, Piquet and Mansell going to wheel to wheel etc. What ever happened to that close racing, years of meddling by the FIA, I don't believe we have had a truly exciting race this decade.

Maybe I should rephrase; I haven't seen an exciting race this decade... I didn't watch the Brazilian GP last year as I was at work!

But my point still stands; we used to have exciting races nearly every race weekend, now we are lucky if we get one exciting race per year!

It's hard for me to gauge having had the best part of a 5 year break. I used to find it amazing when I watched first time round, but I reckon it was more to do with support for a driver than anything else.

This is the major problem this year, its driver support or team support that most people find entertaining.
This year has been classed as boring by people who I personally would have been shocked at were it not for team or driver preference.

Boring as its "second rate" teams such as red bull and the totally "made up" team of Brawn.
Where fully fledged teams such as Mclaren and Fiatarri have been quite frankly poor due to "luck" "poor tracks" "the inability to test" ... The list goes on.

There is more to Formula One than overtaking (though, of course, you do want to see some of it). However, I also get a lot of enjoyment from watching the development races (before the testing ban, I suppose) and reading about the different design philosophies, the politics of Formula One, and the tactical side of things. Watch Formula One with live timing and FORIX; it's much better, allowing you to actually understand what's happening.
