Ever since Spyker introduced their B-spec car and Adrian Sutil put in good performances at Spa and Fuji, Spyker have now started to put extra pressure on Super Aguri and Toro Rosso. Not only that but Sutil was also able to overtake the likes of Trulli and also challenge Coulthard's Red Bull at Spa.
Also Super Aguri have now dropped down the pecking order and now seem to be the last cars on the grid ahead of Yamamoto's Spyker. I think this is now a telling tale on why it is better to build your own cars than to use a customer car, and this could be a key to finally put the debate to sleep when Pro-Drive use next year's McLaren chassis and engines.
Let's start off with Super Aguri, they are using last year's Honda chassis with a few modifications. At the start of the season Sato surprised us all by getting the car into the PP shootout at Melbourne, and also overtake Alonso at Canada. As this is last year's car it has come with all the upgrades that were added to last year's Honda as the 2006 season progressed, and everybody else this year started off with cars from scratch, Super Aguri have dropped back down the grid as a result of everybody catching up with superior upgrades, and also the increasing difficulty in improving the Super Aguri chassis any further.
Toro Rosso started off this year with Adrian Newey's sleek and cool looking Red Bull chassis. Unlike their sister team though, Toro Rosso do not get the upgrades that Red Bull Racing do and their engineers are limited to whatever they can find out about the car. In the meantime Red Bull Racing have an easier task on their hands when it comes to upgrades because it was Newey and their Engineers who designed the car and they will know it inside out unlike Toro Rosso.
The same story is likely to happen to Pro-Drive next year when they get effectively the 2008 McLaren as Cilit Bang kindly pointed out for us in another topic on this forum.
As for Spyker, because they built their own car right from scratch, they knew exactly what to do when they came round to building the B-Spec car and in comparison with the original, the B-Spec car - especially in the hands of Sutil - is a quantum leap. This is thanks to the team having built their own car and having the knowledge of how it works and what doesn't work.

They may have the same car as McLaren, but they won't have the same personnel. McLaren's engineers will be able to setup the car much more quickly and to a better standard, and will also be able to get more out of the parts.
