I agree, it looks a bit odd that Hamilton took that line and Vettel must have seen him in the corner of his eye and bang. It reminds me of Monaco 04 when Montoya ran into the back of MSC in the tunnel.

At the start of the clip, Hamiltons car is the only car in shot with clear track behind and in front, the safety car is maybe 2 car lengths in front off to the left and webber maybe 4 car lengths behind and vettel are off the right.

at the moment before the crash, webber is maybe 3 car lengths behind the safety car (without hamilton obstructing his view of it). Webber stated afterwards that he wanted to keep away from Vettel as he was getting too close.

First of all, I think Webber owes Vettel an apology even before watching this video. The race was too extreme, and the only reason Webber didn't hit Lewis was because Lewis was way outside... doing some brake-dancing moves.

Also, didn't Webber pass Lewis for a moment there under the pace car??

Fuji race, and the whole 2007 F1 season has been a circus. Let's hope its over soon, give the British press their 'Tiger Woods' and move on......

From what I see is that Webber was trying not to pass Hamilton under the yellow and Vettel was caught off guard. The accident would not have happened if Hamilton had taken the proper line, the one Webber took, that's just my take after watching the video.

You can take any line cant you?

But in these conditions, I think not.

Yes you can I just think that had some input to the cause of the incident.

Thats in the rules? He was worried about Webber getting so close, taking a wider line kept him out the way.

He was worried about Webber getting so close, taking a wider line kept him out the way.

I agree with his concern's in that aspect.

I'd agree with that if he kept momentum up but why slow down at the same time?

Going fast on that line would've caused no issues.

perhaps it was slippier off line

Perhaps, but the car looks stable. I see no wobble, nor drift. just a slow gentle brake, miles away from the safety car, miles from anywhere in fact.

In general on this subject, if you follow F1 then you know that behind the safety car all drivers speed up and slow down and don't always follow the racing line, weaving from side to side at times and often the lead driver will bunch up the pack. One driver following another has to give himself time (especially in those conditions) to react to what the driver in front does.

I remember when button was at williams, Schumacher was leading behind the safety car with hakkinen behind him. Schumacher braked hard and further back button crashed out to avoid crashing into the car in front

In this case it looks to me like Webber was caught between a rock and a hard place and Vettels inexperience caught them both out.
