Five drivers given grid penalties

By Pablo Elizalde Saturday, October 3rd 2009, 10:26 GMT

Five Formula 1 drivers were given penalties for not lifting off during a yellow-flag period in qualifying for the Japanese Grand Prix.

Championship leader Jenson Button, team-mate Rubens Barrichello, Renault driver Fernando Alonso, Force India's Adrian Sutil and Toro Rosso's Sebastien Buemi were given five-place grid penalties after the session.

The race stewards deemed the first four drivers had not lifted off sufficiently at the end of Q2, when Buemi had crashed, leaving debris on track.

Brawn team boss Ross Brawn said his drivers, who had not set a time until then, had not lifted at all.

"No, they swerved to avoid the problem. But they didn't lift off, no," said Brawn.

Swiss driver Buemi was also reprimanded by the stewards for driving back to the pits with a damaged car and impeding other drivers.

Button had qualified in seventh, Barrichello in fifth, Alonso in 12th, Sutil in fourth and Buemi in 10th.

The real winner in all of this is Rosberg, in my opinion. Starting sixth with a lot more fuel than anyone else (EDIT: missed Kubica >.<). This may, just may, give him the opportunity to get on to the podium if he can put in good enough stints. Button could, potentially, be the biggest loser as he is now starting ahead of two KERS cars and behind a rookie in a car that seems to be performing quite well.

Maybe it could rain then we can see who is best in the rain Captain-Invincible or Vettel!

Absolutely Rosberg, Kimi got reasonable chance to get podium too. Depending of course a bit if the race tomorrow is going to be a similar crash&go safety car race. But still looks likely to be an interesting race. Unlike most races I'm not hoping for rain, it's interesting enough without.

Hamilton 3kg heavier than Vettel. FFFFFFUUUUUUUUU.. well the only shot for him is to KERS vettel in the beginning of the race, but it will be very hard to fight for first place. I'm sure he'll get by Trulli.

Even if Vettel wins and Button doesen't get points it wont be close, it's still between rubens ja jenson. GO RUBENSSS tomorrow is his shot

Yeah I made a typo. I'm very pleased with McLarens pace, but 2.5kg is just too little difference ;D
