From autosport.com:

Button won't push to seal title in Japan

By Jonathan Noble and Pablo Elizalde Tuesday, September 29th 2009, 09:09 GMT

Jenson Button says he will not change his approach in order to try to seal the championship at the first attempt in the Japanese Grand Prix this weekend.

The British driver is 15 points ahead of Brawn team-mate Rubens Barrichello with just three races remaining, and he could wrap up the title if he finishes five points ahead of the Brazilian at Suzuka.

But Button insists he is not thinking of that, and says he will approach the weekend as normal and hope the circumstances play in his favour.

"It's another race," said Button, who finished fifth in last weekend's Singapore Grand Prix. "People say that if I finish five points in front of Rubens I can win the championship.

"I know that's a fact, for sure. But my aim is to win the world championship and I'm not going to take any unusual risks.

"I'm just going to drive like I have been and hopefully that will be enough."

The Briton, who has not won since the Turkish Grand Prix, admitted that with a such a competitive field it was vital to try and maximise each weekend, even if it meant scoring just a couple of points.

"If you look at the last few races you could say it is, but anything can happen," he said. "It's just an unusual year where there's so many cars that are competitive whatever the conditions. There are so many different possibilities of teams being quick.

"So it makes it very difficult when it comes to strategy and we know we have to beat the Red Bulls, but that's why you see us sometimes at the front fighting for wins and other races we are not.

"But the important thing is to make the most out of the good times, but also the difficult times. When it's difficult you need to pick the points up and that's what I have been trying to do."

Button, however, admitted he was feeling very positive for the Suzuka race after having managed to score a good points haul in Singapore despite having a difficult weekend.

"It was not my best day or as a team it wasn't our best day, so to come away with four points, and lost one point to Vettel and gain one to Rubens I feel like it was a positive weekend, for sure. Going to Japan I'm very positive and looking forward to a good weekend," he said.

He added: "I love it. I think everyone loves Suzuka, and that's the problem. I wish they didn't. But it's a circuit I've enjoyed in the past and where I've gone well, so it's nice to be back there."

And the championship leader also downplayed Red Bull's form at the Singapore Grand Prix, saying the Milton Keynes squad was not that much quicker than his own team.

"I don't think that's the case. In qualifying obviously Rubens had a crash and it meant they weren't on the front row, but their pace in the race wasn't very good. I don't think Sebastian would have won the race either.

"They weren't as quick as we might have thought. Their race pace wasn't as good as others."

What has your approach been for most of the season, Jenson? Devoid of as much ability as possible.

I think it makes sense, he is driving to win the championship and not to win a race. Winning Suzuka in 2009 is not that important in history, winning the 2009 world championship is historically more important

Button has everything to lose and now he's starting to play mind games.

its pretty pathetic to have him say "I'm not going to try hard"

hes not a racer..that's for sure.

Just to clear that up, in the above interview at no point did Jens say "I'm not going to try hard" he did say "I'm not going to take any unusual risks" but that's fair comment.

As for all those Jenson bashing, just think if the season was reversed and Jens was getting those all important and very impressive 6 wins from 7 at the tail end of the season rather than the start. People would be giving Jenson the praise he deserves. But as most have very short memories that impeccable start to the season which has placed Jenson in his current position gets forgotten.

At the end of the day it's results that count and if come the end of the season and Jenson is crowned Champion then nobody will be criticising him for that.

i think people are over exaggerating his words. Hes just saying he doesnt wanna push beyond his skill to win and mess up under pressure.

I thought that too. But it's still silly to say something like that.

Maybe it's not always the circuits what make races boring, it's the drivers. Thats why people like a driver like Hamilton who's always all out, he makes things interesting and is racing to win.

Bulletproof - dont pay them no mind. they bashing jenson coz their nitwit was hopeless at the start of the season. that said i think this thread dont make much sense other than inviting critisizm on jenson.

i don't think it matters does it. button will win the title, wether he seals it in japan or abu dhabi. he will just be do what he has been doing since his early season winfest, just chugging along taking people in the pits and finishing ahead of his rivals. boring title race, good season. roll on next year.

True, but what i got from that interview, he's saying he's willing to trundle around in the midfield and scrape up points.

And as an F1 fan I'm saying how very boring of him.

I say this with all Honestly as a Mclaren Fan - Lewis China 2007 they could of played it safe got 2nd or 3rd and taken the title but because they are a racing team and not a bus service they went for the win and when your really pushing hard to win mistakes happen.

But i'd rather see Lewis do that and LOOSE than him say i'll just take 5th here and 5th there and i'll be WDC.

Nope i'd be giving Ross Brawn and his team the praise HE deserves, that car is very very good yet Jenson can't even set it up properly - case in point Valencia.

At the end of the day it's results that count and if come the end of the season and Jenson is crowned Champion then nobody will be criticising him for that.

Nah he's the luckiest driver in F1.

Rubens has had all the bad luck this season and Jenson's had 1 bad race.

If he gets it he must be the luckiest wdc ever.
#158536
I don't blame Jenson for not taking excessiverisks, he may never get the chance to become WDC again so I believe he is being sensible in the context of the championship especially with the Brawn (probably) being the third best car right now. But I hope he doesn't simply sit in 4th place in every race when he has a much faster car than the car in front.

Seriously, Button is renowned for making very few errors in what is one of the smoothest driving styles in F1.

You claim that if Jenson does win its down to the car being good and Rubens being unlucky, so at no point in this season has he deserved the win? is it ALL luck?

Button in that article claims states...

"It's just an unusual year where there's so many cars that are competitive whatever the conditions. There are so many different possibilities of teams being quick."
"So it makes it very difficult when it comes to strategy and we know we have to beat the Red Bulls, but that's why you see us sometimes at the front fighting for wins and other races we are not."
"But the important thing is to make the most out of the good times, but also the difficult times. When it's difficult you need to pick the points up and that's what I have been trying to do."

also...
"I'm just going to drive like I have been and hopefully that will be enough."

Im reading that as largely error free and taking as many points as he can from each race.

I fail to see how this can be misread as "I am not a real driver so I will sit back, relax and eat ice cream with Kimi."
