At any rate, he's Scottish. We just don't have any good tennis players so we pretend Scotland is part of Northern Newcastle.

I'm not a big Murray fan, mainly because I'm not really much of a tennis fan. I keep up to date with it in the papers or on the net, and I occasionally watch matches, but nothing major.

I didn't think the match was that high quality. Both players had more unforced errors than winning shots, Del Potro did not show up for almost all of the first two sets, and Federer was regularly shanking balls and could barely serve and his movement looked tired in the fifth set. It was really a contest of who could keep their game the least unclean and then take their chances.

The fact that Federer lost the match is overshadowing the fact he was two points away from victory on two occasions. Federer, however, did not take his chances, and, deservedly, was made to pay for it. Really, Federer lost the match when he did not take his chance to go two sets to love up. Had he done so, there was no way Del Potro was coming back. Increasingly over the past season or two, Federer has not been taking his chances in matches, and it has cost him a Grandslam or two. In the past, he could get away with it, as his game was so much better than his opponent's, he would get other chances. As Federer's powers have begun to decline and as a new generation of players are beginning to come through, he won't get as many bites of the cherry. The loss is also made all the more dramatic by the fact that we've become used to seeing Federer winning slams look easy, when it's simply not.

A lot of credit has to go to Del Potro as well. He was obviously bricking it in the first set, but managed to get his head together and then never looked like thinking he could lose the match. Moreover, he had a pretty tough draw, having to go through some tough players to even get to the final. Now that he's got his first slam, he knows more or less what it takes to win them, so more will certainly follow, and not just on hardcourts.

On the Murray issue, the guy is clearly talented, but he's also slightly overrated. His game is abdundant with weaknesses at the moment. His second serve is woeful, so it's just as well his first serve is good. His forehand is poor, lacking power, depth, variety and consistency. Although his movement on hardcourts is good, it's merely average on grass and lame on clay. The mental side of his game is poor, as he is prone to lapses in concentration and is unable to adjust his strategy on court. However, the tactical side of Murray's game is, by far, his biggest weakness. The guy is a pusher. All he does is retrieve balls and plays the percentages. This is fine against mugs, but as soon as he finds himself up against any player willing to attack who is on form, he will be massacred. Defensive tennis just means you are less likely to lose. Against the very best players in the world, you need to seize the iniative.

Murray's victories are overrated, too. Masters Series are decent tournaments, but they are only one week long, only involve best of three-set matches, have much less prize money, and are of much less interest to fans and the media Furthermore, not all of the top players enter them, and those who do enter often do not play their best tennis. Sampras and Federer, for instance, use(d) them for practicing. Grandslams, however, are a totally different kettle of fish. They are over two weeks long, involve best of five set matches, have prize money running into the millions of dollars, are watched under the full gaze and scrutiny of the tennis world, media and public, and all of the world's top players enter them and do all they can to win. For Murray to even be remotely considered as a remotely notable tennis player, he has to win slams, and do so convincingly.
