McLaren set to run last upgrade

By Pablo Elizalde Friday, September 18th 2009, 10:31 GMT

The McLaren team will introduce its last major upgrade at this weekend's Singapore Grand Prix before it shifts its focus to the 2010 car.

The Mercedes-powered squad has made significant progress in the last few races, something that has allowed the team to fight on top of the field following a slow start to the season.

While several teams have already shifted focus to 2010, McLaren has continued to push with the development of this year's car and the team will introduce its last update package next weekend in Singapore.

Team boss Martin Whitmarsh admitted he is confident McLaren is set for another strong outing.

"Our pace in recent grands prix increasingly shows that we have developed MP4-24 into a pretty decent all-round competitor and we remain confident for the Singapore Grand Prix," said Whitmarsh in a team preview.

"For this race, we are introducing our last major upgrade package of the season before fully devoting our efforts and resources towards next year's car.

"Last year's event was a fantastic success and a testimony to what can be achieved in Formula 1 when you have vision, dedication and foresight. Everybody at Mercedes is looking forward to these final four flyaway races, the climax to a thrilling, eventful and unexpected title battle and our own steadily improving fortunes."

World champion Lewis Hamilton said he will push for victory in Singapore, having taken a cautious approach in last year's race.

"I remember my race in Singapore last year was all about damage limitation - I was driving with one eye on the world championship and wasn't going to take too many risks. I was happy to finish on the podium.

"This year, it's very different - I know I'm out of the title hunt and I want to attack these last four races, pushing for as many victories as I can."

thank you :D

i guess this would signal the end of a possible prodrive team if he moved to renault

...it could be that Prodrive will buy out or 'inherit' Renault if they get expelled / pull out of F1.

Singapore carries out track changes

By Pablo Elizalde Tuesday, September 22nd 2009, 09:03 GMT

Singapore Grand Prix organisers have carried out modifications to the circuit for this weekend's second race in the country.

The Marina Bay circuit, which hosted F1's first night race last year, has been tweaked in several places in order to improve the racing conditions this season.

Among the most significant changes, there's a modification to the pit exit, which has been realigned to join the track after the first corner.

The pit entry has also been realigned to leave the track before turn 22.

Organisers said the circuit has been resurfaced between turns 5 and 7 in order to reduce the bumps many drivers complained about last year.

The rest of the changes are:

• The outer pit lane has been resurfaced.
• New kerbs have been installed on the entry to turns 1 and 5.
• The apexes of turns 13 and 14 have been tightened slightly.
• The second and third apexes of turn 10 have been moved left and right respectively to make the chicane slower.
• The kerbs on the three apexes of turn 10 have been redesigned in order to reduce the risk of a car being damaged if it crosses them.
• The kerbs on the exit of turn 14 have been moved 10 metres downstream.
• All rubber exit kerbs have additional fixations.
• An extra driver egress point has been added on the left between turns 17 and 18.
• The wall around the outside of turns 22 and 23 has been moved closer to the track.

What's this, changes being made to make it easier for the drivers? Who hadn't seen that coming?

Welcome to the 14th round of the 2009 FIA Formula One World Championship, the Singapore Grand Prix. It looks like being cooler than last year's inaugural race, with temperature highs between 28 and 29 degrees Celsius all weekend, and a strong likelihood of thunderstorms each day.

Thunderstorms in the dark under floodlights. On a street circuit such as this could be a nightmare.
