Renault given two-year suspended ban

By Jonathan Noble Monday, September 21st 2009, 12:14 GMT

Renault has been handed a two-year suspended ban for its involvement in fixing the result of last year's Singapore Grand Prix.

The FIA has also stated that former team principal Flavio Briatore will face a lifetime ban from involvement in any of its series - and for anyone involved with him.

Former director of engineering Pat Symonds has been given an effective five-year ban from involvement in FIA-sanctioned motorsport.

More to follow.

Great news for Renault. Bad news for Flavio and fair news for Pat.

My team have gotten away lightly I will admit. But for anyone who thought Alonso was involved!? :wavey-finger:

I think its a lenient but fair punishment, i mean if you look at it the otheway if they just banned them from F1 outright you'd be flushnig 500 or so jobs down the toilet, for people who were not even invovled.

I strongly doubt Alonso knew, especialy with the ammount of leaked doc's we've seen.

Personally I think they were far too lenient.

Flavio Briatore got what he deserved, however Pat Symonds recieved only a five year ban and Nelson Piquet remains untouched. Renault also got off extremely lightly.

The FIA and WMSC need to take a step back and ask what would have happened had Nelson Piquet NOT lost his drive at Renault?
Would this even have ever came to light if he hadn't been bitter about the termination of his contract and decided to drop the ball on Renault F1?

Frankly, money seems to do the talking more than common sense and good sportsmanship.

Briatore is in the best position possible, he's out of F1 permanently.

Symonds should be the same, not just for five years.

Piquet should lose his super license immediately and permanently for going along with the plan and putting other drivers, track officials and spectators at risk.

Renault should be stripped of all constructors points this year, and banned from competing in Formula One or acting as an engine supplier for a minimum of five years.

There's been too much stupid and ridiculous behaviour in F1 in the last couple of years where people think they're above the rules.

The sport really needs to return to its roots and get back to good racing. I miss the good old fights for the championship lead.
