Glory Hunting...

You wish you could have a go don't you?

Not really, why glory hunt when you can bask in the glory if your selected competitor(s) is triumphant in a sport that you actually follow?

Why do you have to select a competitor? If your country's doing well at anything, you shouldn't ignore it just because you weren't interested in the past.

Yes but that's the problem. 9/10 you'll watch your country win and then never bother with that sport again until the next time your country is doing well.

Where is the enjoyment in that? It is a shallow victory in my book.

Most of the people or teams I support are the best in their sports. I love to see the best win, I don't like it when someone lesser gets the rub of the green and gets success I don't feel they deserved. I'll still stick with the guy who I think is the best, even if I'm wrong and back my instincts.

If you support teams, or players, for different reasons then great. As long as you enjoy supporting them, how can there be a problem?

That's not the point.

Let's pick a rather weird sport - curling.

Scotland usually do very well in that. Infact we've won quite a few times.

Do I celebrate when we win? Nope
Why? Because I have no interest in that sport and it would be shallow and offensive to get the Saltire out.

At the end of the day there is more to certain sports than the big tournaments or when a certain country or team has the chance to win something.

It's glory hunting.
There is nothing wrong with following the best, if you follow the sport.

However, If you simply follow the best so that you can be associated with a winner then that is wrong. Very wrong.

That would be sad. A person wouldn't do that unless they struggled to achieve success themselves.

But if you see your country's doing well at a certain sport and you decide to watch it because of the hype it's getting - and you enjoy it. Well that's great, it's definitely not wrong.

Glory hunting in a different situation:

If a guy plays two sports, he's really good at both of them. He loves sport No.1 the most, but he still enjoys sport No.2 and he's actually better at it.

It's glory hunting to follow a career in sport No.2. But it's not wrong.

That's not glory hunting, that's enjoying two sports.

Now, the British F1 fans that didn't want to know Jenson last season and the one before, but were calling him the best thing since sliced bread and willing him to win at the start of this season...that is glory hunting.

Agreed. Yes, maybe some did stick with him from through the tough times, but they are the real fans. Those who have jumped on the bandwagon and yet sport Lewis/Macca gear - well that's glory hunting!

JamesD89 is trying to defend the indefensible here. If you suddenly start buying tickets for a sport in which you formerly had little or no interest and whipping out national flags and replica shirts, there are no two ways about it. You are a glory hunter.

McLaren Fan, I'm not trying to defend r a p e (I can't believe this forum has a filter for r a p e) or murder here, glory hunting is a very defendible cause. There's nothing wrong with it. Just because you don't like it, Ewan doesn't like it, what does that matter?

If some guy enjoys supporting Button this year and who knows, Vettel next year, then so be it. Why do you even let it bother you? Unless he starts saying "I told you Button was the real deal, I've stood by him through thick and thin", then give him a break and let him enjoy the sport.

If somebody supports their local football team, who never win anything, they don't deserve to have a big "Loser" sticker slapped on their face. They're just giving their support for a different reason.

Relax people, you're allowed to support whoever you want, whenever you want. A bit of friendly banter's always good, but resenting someone because of who they support just isn't needed.

There will always be people that jump on the bandwagon when things are going well its a fact of life.

True fans that stick with things through thick and thin get upset by people like this, and its easy to see why.

Round here for example (football)when I was growing up all you see was Liverpool shirts. Now its all Man Utd and Chelsea.Ten years ago didn't see any of them,I must admit I think glory hunting gits.
