Well, after much hullabaloo about the trick, I decided to watch his "explanation". I feel as though I've been cheated out of an hour of my life, as none of explanations held any water. They were woolly and undeveloped. I wonder why. f*** you, Derren Brown.

No, the getting people in a room, getting them to write guess numbers and taking the average. It's all crap as far as I was concerned.

If you flip a coin ten times, and each time it comes up heads. Which side of the coin is most likely to show the next time you flip it?

A lot of people would try and answer that, but the fact is, its still a 50/50 chance that the next result will be heads or tails. A coin doesn't consider previous results or anything like, its just going to be a 50/50 chance every time. The same logic applies to the lottery, its random, previous results can't affect future outcomes. In other words, what Derren was saying was utter toss.

I'm going with the other option he mentioned. He either fixed the lottery or just isn't going to tell us how he went about doing things.

It's random, but with weighted probabilities. Yeah, heads or tails is 50/50. But I'm arguing that not all the balls going into that machine have an equal chance of coming out. And once a ball has come out, it affects the probability of the next (and not just in line with normal probability theory!!). That's why there would be a pattern.

Yeh but, lets say ball number 2 comes out that just means that the next ball can only be 1 or 3-45

those remaing 44 balls are completely random unless you could work out there trajectories, but at best you'd only be able to work that out once they were released.

I'm not saying you need a model which simulates the draw. You don't need to know the motions of the balls. You just need to recognise a pattern in the results.

He completely avoided mentioning why these patterns form, but it has to be that the machine is already fixed, or biased.

There is no patern its random.

None of us know how he did it. That's a guess, the same as everybody else's.

If he used a method like that, then I think his point is how easily people get drawn to what they hope is the truth and in doing so miss the obvious. But that isn't complicated, it isn't impressive. It doesn't strike me as something he'd do.

I'm still at a loss as to what happened.

Right I have just finished watching the show (I recorded it and have only just got time to watch it so I avoided this topic)

DB believes that emotion can make people more predictable

1 he got a woman out of the audience who said she had a fear of mice. he then told her to put her hand in 4 box's one at a time (one box contained a mouse) She does so and low and behold no mouse in any box but because she was scared it worked.

2 He then got a bloke who (he massaged his feet and gave him a tetanus jab) put 20 paper cups on the floor up turned and then told the man that he had to stamp on 14 of them. However there is a knife pointing up that would stab him through the foot beneath one of them (inducing fear) however if he did stab himself in the foot he would receive a gift of money that then man decided (£500,000 which induced greed) The man then stamped on 14 cups and then DB said he knew the number that would be left because they where written on the back of the cheque (that the man had in his pocket the whole time) He then said the because of the greed that the man would of gone all the way and stamped on all the cups apart from one. which he did. He then told the bloke that there was no knife but under the 1 remaining cup was a mouse.

He then said that it was OK for humans but how could he change the out put of a machine would not work the same.

That's one of the extreme theories, butI don't really think it's likely. We all know he's been trying to do this for a year and it takes much longer than that to use up a bottle of fairy liquid

Same. It seems completely believable but it didn't work on me or my brother.
