Lets take a look at this.

Mclaren has been caught cheating more than once now.

Renault has been caught cheating more than once now.

Ferrari has not been caught, but they sure has hell have cheated more than once now (park it Michael)

So, refresh my memory...which teams have dominated the sport for the last god knows how long?

To answer the original question though, all racing is dirty. The words Race Car are from the original Latin Racinus Car-o-cash which means - Cheaters typically win...the basstards.

I don't think it is any dirtier now than it was 10-15 years ago it is just that the media and the internet is a lot better at spreading information around the world quickly.

In an interview for local news paper visiting Mika Hakkinen put it well:

"Negative stuff, political stuff, I don't like that. These should not be the headlines of Formula One. It seemed like people felt a great need to shout their problems to the rest of the world. In my time, of course there were politics and disagreements. But we kept it in the business."

Second quote from the same interview:

"If anyone were to ask me to crash somebody or crash on the barrier, I would tell him to crash yourself."

F1 is run as a business by everyone who participates in it apart from a few staff members and drivers on each team. As a sport F1 is pretty dirty but as a business, its pretty tame in the dirty stakes. None of the F1 teams have deliberately killed people yet...

Monaco 06 Ferrari Cheated and were caught, and punished.

Oz 07 Ferrari Cheated and Were Caught, and the part banned (flexi floor)

Out of all the old school teams on the current Grid, i think only williams are the most honest.

but you could say that the way that Williams broke ranks from FOTA was a bit of a dirty move. Due to William doing what they needed to do to survive.

I am sure there are people that think Renault needed to get results to survive last year.

Yeah but Williams was looking after themsleves and only (only - haha) broke a promise? no?

But they didn't lose the race win ;)

that wasn't really cheating. you could argue that getting their technology banned was a dirtier trick.

Ferrari have done the exact same thing plenty of times in the past!

I agree but I was trying to make the point that everyone has to do what they need to to survive. be it breaking a promise to FOTA, using the information from another team. or even crashing a car.

It is easy for us to say no that is wrong but we have not got a bored of directors putting us under a load of pressure to get some race results.

Maybe there was a part of Alonso's contract saying he had to win a race or he was free to drive else where. I think Renault (parent company) hold a lot of regard for Alonso.

yeh i know, but it doesn't make their use of the flexible floor cheating. Colin Chapman was a serial cheater if bending the technical regs is cheating.

Eddie Irvine's view of F1 cheating.

I read that just before I came on here and I have to say I was a little shocked at his attitude - possibly putting people at risk, not to mention damaging the integrity of F1, is 'just slightly' on the wrong side of cheating?!?!
He does however indiacate that there's a whole lot more cheating going on than we know about. Maybe more than we could even guess at. Which doesn't do much for my faith in F1 - if Eddie's attitude is to be believed, we're just watching a charade :(
