Monza installs higher kerbs at chicanes

Robert Kubica rides a kerb at the Spanish GPFormula 1 drivers will be discouraged from cutting the first and second chicanes at Monza this weekend following the installation of higher kerbs.

The problem of cars straight-lining the kerbs at Rettifilo and Roggia has been an issue at the Italian Grand Prix for several years, despite big efforts being made to find a solution that both the governing body and the drivers are happy with.

This year, the FIA has approved plans for high combination kerbs to be fitted at the apexes of the first and second chicanes - which should deter drivers from trying to cut the corners.

The combination kerb concept has already proved to be a big success after being fitted at the Veedol Chicane at the Nurburgring and the new Barcelona chicane (see picture).

The new high kerbs at the first chicane were reduced in height following criticism on the first day of the Italian Grand Prix weekend.

"For me, these things are a safety risk," Timo Glock, who had a violent spin over the new 'combination kerbs' in morning practice, told Auto Motor und Sport.

He also said damage to the front wing and even the monocoque is possible if a driver strikes the kerbs at the wrong angle.

FIA race director Charlie Whiting responded by insisting the kerbs at both the first and second chicanes at Monza are actually "only two inches higher" than last year.

He also revealed that the same style of kerbing is used at Montreal, the Nurburgring and Barcelona. But it is believed the FIA responded by lowering the kerbs at least at the first chicane because they may have dissuaded drivers from attempting overtaking moves.

I think Glock needs to realise Monza used to have even higher kerbs at some parts of the track than the ones installed at the Retifilio. :yawn:

:banghead: With the millions of dollars that drivers get paid for driving a F1 car, you'd think they could cope with a few elevated curbs... stop bitching and get on with the racing!


Agreed. We should be able to line the tracks with spikes and place a couple oil slicks in there for fun and the drivers should be able to figure out how to just deal with it.
