unless then canopy is the only thing protecting them from burning fuel . . .

But I still don't want canopies

Aye - it kind of defeats the term open-wheel series

Indeed it does. I'm not one to hold on to tradition, but F1 is open wheel, open cockpit racing.

unless the fuel has pooled in the top of canopy in an upturned car.

Perhaps Massa should read all the little signs that you get at all motorsport events. you know the ones that say "Motorsport is dangerous"

I am sure that people who drove F1 in the 50's, 60's, 70's would love to of been only worried about something hitting them on the head in the car. instead of possible death everytime they turned the steering wheel.

I'm sure they would be happy if they had better safety stuff, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't improve safety further, that doesn't necessarily mean canopies - most logical argument surely is investing in developing new better helmets?

Is it possible to develop a helmet that can protect against a bouncing wheel going at that speed? Surely the momentum it carries is too massive.

If I'm not mistaken Felipe had/has the latest and greatest version but yes you are correct in that the momentum is far to great. The weakest link is the human body.

Pretty Much... :(

- 100 mph fastball from Nolan Ryan: 145 joules
- Barry Bonds’ swing (33 oz. bat at 70 mph): 458 joules
- 9mm handgun: 513 joules
- .44 Magnum handgun: 1,510 joules
- The spring that hit Massa (800 grams at 160 mph): 2,046 joules
- AK-47 (7.62mm round): 2,599 joules
- 12 gauge shotgun slug: 3,580 joules
- The wheel that killed Henry Surtees (an estimated 12 kg at 120 mph): 17,267 joules

well put.

Havent they changed the design of the helmet that mass used now so that the visor clip is now metal instead of plastic

Yeh but i don't think it would of done that much for Massa.

To Survive the Surtees Crash you would need the helments do have some outer shell that could disapate energy some how.

i don't think its very practical though.
